‘Like being shot out of a cannon’ – Fastest sport on planet called Top Fuel has four-second long races and 300mph speeds

THE fastest sport on Earth sees drivers blasted down tracks at more than 300mph.

Top Fuel drag racing is an elite class of motorsports that pushes drivers’ bodies to the limit.

In races that last just four seconds, drivers get shot to mind-boggling speeds and experience G-forces that only astronauts equal.

Races take place on a 1,000ft track and pits divers one-on-one to see who can get to the finish line first.

Cars can go from zero to 100mph in just one second.

Top Fuel drag cars produce around 10,000 horsepower thanks to supercharged engines.

And while it’s scary to watch, drivers say it’s “extremely addictive.”

Driver Susanne Callin told BBC that it’s like “being shot out of a cannon.”

By the time the race is over, parachutes launch out of the car bringing it to a halt “like someone kicking you in the chest.”

“You lose your breath,” Callin added.

The racing is formatted like a ladder, with drivers qualifying by setting their fastest times.

Then they are paired up fastest against slowest and compete until a winner is determined.

Usually there is a 16-car field in each event, with 14 taking place in the regular season.

Then there are six playoff races to determine a champion.
