The Big 12 Conference has handed down its punishment to Central Florida (UCF) as it addressed the offensive chants from the school's football fans at the weekend.
The UCF Knights stunned the country's then-second-ranked team BYU with a 39-31 double-overtime upset victory in Orlando on Saturday. However, the sunning win was marred by profane anti-Mormon chants from UCF students.
Chants of 'f*** the Mormons,' a reference to BYU's religious background and close ties to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, could be heard ringing out around UCF's stadium throughout the game.
UCF officials acted at the time, ejecting students from the stadium, but the Big 12 Conference, the organization that both UCF and BYU compete in, has has now spoken out on the incident.
The conference condemned the 'discriminatory behavior' as it announced that it had fined the college $100,000.
'While the Conference recognizes the pregame protocols followed by UCF and immediate actions taken during the game, including removal of some individuals responsible for the conduct, discriminatory behavior has no place in the Big 12,' a statement read.
'The Conference has issued UCF a $100,000 fine, which will be directed toward student education initiatives. In conjunction with this action, the Big 12 is implementing an updated Conference-wide policy establishing escalating consequences for discriminatory conduct at athletic events effective immediately.'
The new conference-wide policy includes the automatic $100,000 fine and a formal warning to schools over first-time offenses.
Second incidents of misbehavior will incur further penalties, including a 'competitive penalty, e.g., a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty in football or an unsportsmanlike two-shot technical foul in basketball.'
Anyone ejected for similar conduct will be "prohibited from attending all athletic events for the remainder of the academic year and are subject to applicable University fan/student conduct policies."
UCF is just the latest BYU opponent to perform a chorus of 'f*** the Mormons,' but unlike previous instances of the bigoted refrain, students were repeatedly warned against partaking and some were even ejected.
'No derogatory or vulgar chants,' the public address announcer at UCF's stadium, the Acrisure Bounce House, told the crowd at multiple points in the game, according to fan posts on social media.
Several groups of students were even seen being marched out of the stadium by security staff.
One particularly ugly moment on Saturday came with an injured BYU player being examined on the field as UCF fans again launched into the same chant.
The chants tainted an otherwise thrilling game between the previously unbeaten Cougars and coach Scott Frost's Knights.
Keyone Jenkins sealed UCF's 39-31 upset with a two-yard touchdown pass to tight end Grayson Brousseau in the second overtime.
Needing a touchdown and a two-point conversion to force a third OT, the Cougars (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) drove to the UCF four-yard line, but Bear Bachmeier's fourth-down pass to Walker Lyons fell incomplete, giving the Knights (4-3, 2-2) their first win over a top-5 team in school history.
A week after knocking off then-No. 2 Notre Dame and moving into its highest spot in the AP Top 25 since its national title season of 1984, BYU became the latest unbeaten team to fall in a wild stretch of the college football season.
