Ethiopia Remain Bottom Of Group J After Narrow Losses
Ethiopia

Ethiopia enters the next stage of AFCON 2027 qualifying without a point after losing 1–0 to Sudan on 25 September and 1–0 to Senegal on 29 September 2026. With four group matches remaining, the November window offers the next opportunity to change that position.

Ethiopia’s opening defeats may shape the odds quoted on an online betting platform, but the two identical scorelines came from different match situations. Sudan’s winner arrived late, while Senegal took the lead early; the timing of each goal matters when assessing the results.

Two Narrow Defeats With Different Timelines

CAF’s report of the opening match records a goalless first half between Sudan and Ethiopia. The teams remained level for much of the second half before Mohamed Eisa scored in the 86th minute. Ethiopia were therefore close to completing the fixture without conceding before the late breakthrough.

The Senegal match developed differently. Ibrahim Mbaye scored after 11 minutes from Nicolas Jackson’s pass, leaving Ethiopia to pursue an equaliser for most of the contest. Senegal maintained the advantage and finished with the only goal of the match.

The difference is relevant to a football assessment. One match was level until its closing stages; the other required Ethiopia to respond to an early deficit. Treating both simply as another 1–0 defeat removes that distinction and makes the team’s opening performances appear more uniform than the timelines support.

Group J After the Opening Window

CAF’s group review published on 2 October places Senegal and Mozambique level on four points. Sudan have three, while Ethiopia have none. Mozambique hold the superior goal difference after drawing 1–1 with Senegal and beating Sudan 4–1.

The opening records are straightforward:

  • Mozambique — four points from a draw and a win.
  • Senegal — four points from a draw and a win.
  • Sudan — three points from a win and a defeat.
  • Ethiopia — no points after two defeats.

Group J contains no tournament co-host. Under the qualifying format published by CAF, the teams finishing first and second in such groups advance to the finals. Ethiopia’s immediate problem is therefore the gap to the qualifying positions, rather than a special qualification arrangement involving a host team.

Two matches have been played in a six-match group campaign. The remaining fixtures still matter, but they need to produce points if Ethiopia are to improve their position.

Mozambique’s Results Add a Different Challenge

CAF lists Mozambique v Ethiopia among the next Group J fixtures in November. Mozambique’s opening results make this a different assignment from either of Ethiopia’s first two matches.

Against Senegal, Mozambique recovered after conceding first, with Geny Catamo equalising before the interval. Against Sudan, they built a 4–0 lead before conceding a late penalty, with Chamito scoring twice. The opening record combines a recovered point with a win in which several players contributed goals.

For Ethiopia, the football question is how to prevent Mozambique from developing that attacking rhythm while creating enough opportunities at the other end. The two completed defeats establish that Ethiopia have yet to score in this group campaign. They do not, by themselves, identify the changes required to end that sequence.

Possession figures, chance locations, shots on target and the next selected personnel would provide more detail. A scoreline can establish the outcome without explaining whether the attacking problem came from limited chances, finishing or the opponent’s defensive approach.

November Dates and the Remaining Route

CAF’s published calendar assigns Matchdays 3 and 4 to the international window from 9 to 17 November 2026. Matchdays 5 and 6 are scheduled for 22–30 March 2027.

CAF lists Mozambique v Ethiopia and Senegal v Sudan for the next Group J round, within the November international window.

The finals are scheduled for 19 June–17 July 2027, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda as co-hosts. The tournament’s return to East Africa gives the qualifying campaign a regional focus, while Ethiopia’s route remains determined by its Group J results.

Betting Questions Require Separate Evidence

Betting analysis needs to distinguish a match forecast from a team’s longer qualifying outlook. A selection about the next ninety minutes concerns a particular opponent and match period. A prediction about reaching the finals concerns the remaining group campaign and its qualification conditions.

The two narrow defeats also do not establish a dependable goal-total pattern. Two observations are insufficient to explain how Ethiopia will approach Mozambique or how the next lineup will affect the contest. A current price can reflect an assessment of those factors without proving what the result will be.

A ticket covering a full-time result may have different settlement conditions from one covering qualification, a distinction that can be clarified through 1xbet customer support if the recorded terms are unclear. Ethiopia’s two opening matches, meanwhile, provide different evidence for assessing goal markets: one stayed level until the 86th minute, while the other was decided by an early goal.

Ethiopia’s Challenge in the Remaining Group Matches

The next meaningful updates are the confirmed November fixture details, squad announcements and performances in the next group matches. A first goal would end the current scoring sequence; points would change Ethiopia’s standing. These are separate developments and should be assessed separately.

The Mozambique fixture will also test the relevance of the opening evidence. Ethiopia face a side that has already taken points from both Senegal and Sudan, but the contest will have its own circumstances. The next matches will show whether Ethiopia can combine the resistance seen against Sudan with a scoring response when the opponent takes the lead.
