Erling Haaland was caught on camera criticising Gianluigi Donnarumma during Manchester City's 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa. The loss at Villa Park brought City's perfect start to the Premier League season to an end. Enzo Maresca's team travelled to meet Villa aiming to secure eight victories from eight in the league but fell 1-0 behind within six minutes. Nicolas Jackson took advantage of a Marc Guehi mistake and fired home.

The away side fought back and, following some resolute Villa defending, City drew level. None other than Haaland nodded in an Iliman Ndiaye delivery in the 52nd minute.

However, the forward's celebration was cut short. At the hour mark, Jackson emerged once again and unleashed a strike directly at City goalkeeper Donnarumma. Yet the Italian allowed the effort to squirm beneath him and into the net for 2-1.

The scoreline remained unchanged despite City pushing forward in the closing stages.

Haaland appeared visibly agitated at the final whistle, but footage from the opening half reveals that his frustrations had begun well before City's fate was decided. In the 33rd minute, an exchange with the ultimately responsible Donnarumma proved rather unpleasant.

City gave away a free-kick shortly after the half-hour mark as Guehi fouled Jackson on the counter-attack. The Villa players began preparing the set piece just beyond the penalty area.

But Donnarumma momentarily moved away from his line as the set-piece was being organised and confronted the official in protest of the decision. Several City players had been remonstrating with the referee regarding the call.

Haaland took exception to the Italian abandoning his goal and was quickly spotted signalling towards the 27-year-old, seemingly instructing him to return, as he shouted at his goalkeeper angrily.

Donnarumma wasn't required to make a stop from the subsequent free-kick as Johan Manzambi sent the attempt over. However, in the second period, Jackson's fierce shot did squirm beneath him in an expensive mistake.

Speaking following the fixture, manager Maresca told TNT Sports that both goals City surrendered could have been prevented. He said: "Absolutely, both.

"Sometimes you have to be a bit more lucky because we only conceded those two chances, but we created a lot of chances. We played most of the game in their box.

"But you have to be clinical and avoid mistakes like the two goals we conceded. The overall performance was good. Second half, we conceded in transition.

"We needed to defend that a little better and be a little bit luckier in that transition but that is football," he added. "We will learn from that."
