Fiorentina extended their winless Serie A home run to eight matches as they came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Atalanta at Stadio Artemio Franchi.
La Viola have drawn five and lost three of those games, while their overall run without a win has now reached five matches. Atalanta are also without victory in four games, although the draw ended a sequence of four successive away defeats.
Atalanta suffered an early setback when Thomas Kristensen was forced off injured inside the opening four minutes. He became the second Atalanta defender in as many matches to suffer an injury, following Raoul Bellanova’s thigh problem in Saturday’s 4-4 draw with Frosinone.
The visitors took time to settle, allowing Fiorentina to create the early openings. Real Madrid loanee Franco Mastantuono tested Marco Carnesecchi, who made a save to keep out his effort.
Atalanta gradually found their rhythm and nearly scored with their first attempt in the 19th minute, but Eljif Elmas was denied by a goal-saving block. Gianluca Gaetano then shot over for the hosts, while Mastantuono also missed the target from a promising position.
Fiorentina were made to pay for those missed chances four minutes before half-time. Nicola Zalewski’s cross found Charles De Ketelaere, who swept the ball into the net to score before the interval away from home for Atalanta for the first time this season.
The goal was De Ketelaere’s first in domestic football for nine months. It was also the 10th first-half goal Fiorentina have conceded in Serie A this term.
Atalanta almost doubled their advantage before the break, but David De Gea produced an excellent save to keep out Nikola Krstovic’s header.
The second half began late after fourth official Livio Marinelli replaced Federico La Penna as referee because of an injury. Fiorentina responded strongly once play resumed.
Mastantuono curled a free-kick narrowly wide shortly after the restart before Torino loanee Alieu Njie levelled with a superb diving header. He met Alex Jimenez’s cross to score his first Fiorentina goal.
Jimenez has now contributed to five goals in his past seven appearances, scoring twice and providing three assists.
Fiorentina completed the turnaround shortly after the hour mark. Joao Mario, who is on loan from Juventus, cut inside before his shot took a heavy deflection and beat Carnesecchi, giving him his first goal for the club.
Atalanta pressed for an equaliser, with Krstovic sending a good opportunity wide, but Fiorentina could not preserve their lead. Zalewski’s effort squeezed inside the near post 16 minutes from time to make it 2-2 and register his first goal of the season.
Marco Brescianini had a late chance to win it for the visitors, but his close-range effort was blocked.
The result leaves Fiorentina 18th, one place higher but still in the relegation zone. Atalanta remain 12th. Alejandro Jimenez was named Flashscore Man of the Match.
