Lazio go three clear in Serie A as Athletic win Basque derby

Lazio made the most of Inter's slip-up.

Lazio are three points clear at the top of Serie A after coming from behind to beat Cagliari 2-1.

AC Milan’s win over Inter Milan offered Lazio the chance to establish some control in the early stages of the race for the Scudetto, but it looked as if they might fluff their lines when M’Bala Nzola scrambled home an opener for the Sardinians.

But Gustav Isaksen’s curling strike brought Lazio level and Andrea Pinamonti completed the turnaround late on with a header from point-blank range, before Adam Obert was sent off in stoppage time for Cagliari.

Juventus are well off the pace set by Lazio, but the Bianconeri got back to winning ways after their defeat at Genoa by beating Napoli 2-0.

Kerim Alajbegovic gave Juventues the lead in the 70th minute with a stunning long-range effort that flew in off the post, before Napoli’s Luca Marianucci was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Jeremie Boga wrapped up the win for Juve with another sublime strike as he curled into the bottom-right corner.

Lucas Da Cunha’s penalty gave fourth-placed Como a fourth straight win as they beat bottom club Venezia 1-0, and Frosinone’s surprisingly excellent start to the season continued with a 2-0 win over Torino.

And Genoa made it three wins in a row courtesy of a 2-1 victory at Lecce.

Athletic claim derby spoils

Real Madrid moved back within three points of Barcelona at the top of LaLiga with a comfortable 3-0 win at Racing Santander.

However, the highlight of the day in the Spanish top flight was the Basque derby, which went the way of Athletic Bilbao.

Athletic took the lead in the 14th minute when Inaki Williams timed his run perfectly to latch onto brother Nico Williams’ lofted pass, and he kept his cool to lift a dinked finish over Alex Remiro.

Luka Sucic levelled for Sociedad when he rifled into the bottom-right corner from the edge of the area, but Athletic’s advantage was restored from the penalty spot.

Nico Williams won the spot-kick as he was brought down by Jon Aramburu, and Alex Berenguer was fortunate as his tame penalty rolled under Remiro.

Inaki Williams saw a couple of chances to double Athletic’s lead go begging, but it mattered not as they held on to prevail 2-1.

Umar Sadiq scored the only goal of the game as second-bottom Valencia claimed a much-needed 1-0 win at Elche, while Getafe moved out of the bottom three with a 3-1 victory over Sevilla, who finished with 10 men.

Lyon and Paris FC narrow gap to PSG

Lyon are up to third in Ligue 1 following a 2-0 win over Angers.

Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring in the 38th minute when he found the bottom-left corner after Angers failed to clear their lines from a cross, and Lyon secured a win that moves them within three points of leaders Paris Saint-Germain through Corentin Tolisso’s late header.

Marseille made it four wins in a row by beating Toulouse 2-0, but it is four league games without a win for Monaco following their 3-1 defeat to Paris FC.

Lassine Sinayoko scored two first-half goals and provided the assist for Pablo Pagis as he made the points safe after Folarin Balogun had pulled one back, the capital club joining Lyon in moving within three points of PSG.

Elsewhere in Ligue 1, Strasbourg thrashed 10-man Auxerre 5-1.

In the Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt claimed a second win in three games by beating Hamburg 3-1, while Union Berlin drew 1-1 with Cologne.
