It was a fascinating clash at the top of the table as Arsenal came away with a rare win away at Anfield on Sunday night. The Gunners beat Liverpool 1-0 in a match full of drama.

In the end, Kai Havertz's first-half strike was enough to see Mikel Arteta's men pick up all three points. However, there have been plenty of talking points after the match.

Notably, Arsenal were fairly fortunate to avoid giving away a penalty when Jurrien Timber tugged Alexander Isak's shirt inside the box. On top of that, there were also shouts for a possible red card when Noni Madueke moved his head towards Alexis Mac Allister, who then hit the deck in questionable fashion.

The performance of the officials has left many Liverpool fans rather unhappy, and it appears as though ex-player Jermaine Pennant is among the angriest of them.

Jermaine Pennant Calls Out Officials After Liverpool Loss

Jermaine Pennant

Pennant actually played for both Arsenal and Liverpool in his career, but was a boyhood Reds fan and made his allegiances clear after the latest match between his former clubs. The former winger took to social media in a complete head loss to call out Michael Oliver (who wasn't even working on the game) after full-time, writing:

"Michael Oliver on VAR, he should not be anywhere near a Liverpool game, this can not go on he’s an absolute disgrace. How a conversation regarding Isak's pull from Timber is not had, is beyond me…. Head butt on Macca, you can’t do that when on a yellow card already, I swear to god if I ever see him in person I’m going to tell him to his face, you should not be allowed to officiate Liverpool in any capacity."

Funnily enough, Oliver wasn't even on VAR duty and had no role in the game. Instead, Andy Madley was the referee and Stuart Attwell was running the VAR – which just goes to show that Pennant really did lose his head in the heat of the moment.

While Pennant's comments online didn't paint him in the best light, it is at least reasonable that he had some issues with the VAR. Liverpool were certainly unlucky not to get a penalty for Timber's tug on Isak.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher questioned the officials for missing it, stating: "One of the best goalscorers in the league is pulled back seven yards out and it stops him heading the ball - why does he need to make a meal of it? VAR do your job."

Adding to that, former Premier League referee Graham Barber told GIVEMESPORT that it should have been a penalty: "Look, I thought it was a penalty, and I was very surprised that Isak didn't make anything of it, because in my opinion, the shirt pull probably stopped him reaching the ball to head it."

He concluded: "It was a clear shirt pull, and I would be amazed if the referee saw that on the field of play and didn't give a penalty and, equally, I'm not really sure why VAR didn't think that was a shirt pulling offence and why they didn't give a penalty."

That said, the incident involving Mac Allister and Madueke, which saw the winger avoid a red card, was seemingly well refereed by the officials. Speaking to GIVEMESPORT once more, Barber noted: "I think the only talking point about that is the despicable behaviour of Mac Allister. Not only was it an attempt to get a player sent off who shouldn't be sent off, but then also, instigated a melee of players who potentially wouldn't have got involved in something because of his behaviour.

"Why professional footballers do that I have no idea, so forget the Madueke thing, I just can't understand why a professional footballer would behave like that."
