Anthony Gordon prefers pressure to win prizes at Barcelona to relegation fights

Anthony Gordon is thriving under the pressure of playing on the biggest stage for Barcelona and has vowed that his best is yet to come.

The England winger made a £70million move to the Nou Camp in the summer and has enjoyed an impressive start, scoring three goals and grabbing four assists across 13 appearances.

Gordon is relishing the expectation of winning trophies in Spain, insisting it is easier to handle than the pressure of battling relegation at Everton.

“The challenge of joining Barcelona is different to what I’ve had before because I was fighting relegation for two or three years at Everton, which was tough,” Gordon said ahead of the Champions League visit of Aston Villa.

“At Newcastle, we were fighting for maybe Champions League and to push up the table, and now I’m fighting with Barca for every trophy.

“So I’ve had three very different challenges as far as the teams that I played for.

“I really enjoyed all three because they come with different things to help you as a person, help you grow.

“I think to be competing on every front for every trophy, is definitely the most enjoyable. People think it’s more pressure, but it’s actually better pressure than the fight for relegation.”

Gordon is already a fan favourite in the Nou Camp, winning the home support over with his blistering pace and combinations with Raphina and Lamine Yamal.

But he is determined to wow them even more as he settles to life in a new country.

“I have started quite well, considering it’s a new country for me. It’s a big change, a new team,” he said.

“It’s been a massive change for me, my family, and everything that comes with that, but like I said, moving country is the biggest part.

“So I’ve started well, but like I’ve said numerous times since I’ve been here, I can do a lot more.

“I think it will take some time for me to really grow, feel settled, and then when this happens, I think you’ll see the very best of me, which you definitely haven’t seen so far.

“I’ve only been here two and a half months, so I haven’t had long to get used to it.

“I’ve adapted quite well, but can still do much more given more time and definitely will do so.”

Barcelona are looking to bounce back from high-profile defeats by Paris St Germain and Real Madrid, but boss Hansi Flick says he will be coming up against one of the best coaches in the world in Villa boss Unai Emery.

He said: “I said before that he is one of the best coaches in Europe and the world.

“He is very successful. In the way his team plays, you can see a clear structure, and in offence, they have different patterns.

“For me, it is amazing to see his team. The start was not easy, but they came back.

“You can see the confidence they have on the ball, how they play out, and (Nicolas) Jackson is at an unbelievable level.

“For us, it will be a tough game against a good team and, as well, a great coach.”
