Shakur Stevenson Backed Into A Corner Over Raymond Muratalla WBO Order

Shakur Stevenson wants massive paydays, but a mandatory challenger could soon force his hand. Dan Rafael reports that the WBO is preparing to order Stevenson to defend his 140-pound title against Raymond Muratalla this week.

That leaves Shakur facing a tough spot: sign up for a grueling night against a dangerous contender who will not draw a mega-purse, or give up the belt that gives him leverage against the division’s top names.

Top Rank has already pushed the issue. According to Rafael, Muratalla’s promoter sent a letter to the WBO demanding the sanctioning body enforce the mandatory defense. Muratalla is ready to sign.

“I have a copy of a letter that Top Rank sent to the WBO,” Rafael said on About Boxing. “They asked for them to enforce the mandatory and order Shakur to defend against Ray Muratalla.”

The WBO has not officially handed down the ruling yet, but it puts Stevenson in a familiar pinch.

A purse bid would instantly highlight the gap between Shakur’s asking price and what the market is willing to put up for this matchup. Stevenson reportedly wants at least $15 million each time he steps into the ring. Getting that kind of guarantee works when deep-pocketed outsiders want to make a splash, but standard boxing economics make that impossible. Promoters have to recoup costs through ticket sales, broadcast fees, and real fan interest.

If talks stall out, the fight heads to the open market. Promoters would bid to stage the event, with the winning sum funding the fighters based on the WBO’s mandatory split. A purse bid shows the real commercial value of the matchup in plain numbers.

Stevenson walked away from Zuffa Boxing looking for huge unification bouts. Pitching a clash against Dalton Smith or Gary Antuanne Russell is far easier with a championship around his waist. Dropping the strap would immediately drain his bargaining power for those unification talks.

Holding onto it is just as risky. Muratalla gave up his lightweight belt specifically to chase hardware at 140 pounds. He brings relentless forward pressure and an engine built to test anyone for 12 rounds. He lacks marquee star power, but he brings every bit of danger.

Stevenson has sat on the shelf since taking a decision over Teofimo Lopez in January. If he expects to use that WBO strap to demand blockbuster paydays, he will likely have to get through Muratalla first.
