The Oklahoma City Thunder have suffered a major setback as Shams Charania, ESPN’s senior NBA insider, reports that the 2024-25 NBA champions have lost two key players, Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, to potentially season-ending injuries.

“BREAKING: Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams has a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula; Cason Wallace has a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Both will undergo surgery and be sidelined for several months — most, if not the entire season,” Charania reported on X.

This confirms what the doctor already suspected: Jalen Williams has fractured his left ankle after a scary fall near the end of the Thunder’s last win over the Clippers. There is currently no expected timeline for Williams’ return, as he could be done for the season as well, depending on what happens in surgery.

Meanwhile, Cason Wallace injured his left shoulder in the first quarter of the same game after running into an Isaiah Jackson screen. He is expected to be out for at least five to six months, depending on the outcome of the surgery.

“Both players will have surgeries that will cost them several months of the season. These are devastating blows to the Thunder who had championship hopes this season,” Charania further added in his report on SportsCenter.

“This adds a major dent to those hopes. Both players will want to come back around or before the playoffs, but both will be facing long, extensive rehabs. This is a gutting day for the Thunder organization.”

Their star forward, Jalen Williams, is coming off an already injury-plagued season last year and was looking to contribute to their championship ambitions. He suffered multiple hamstring injuries that kept him sidelined for much of last season.

In the first three games of the season, he averaged 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists, shooting 38.5% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc.

Meanwhile, Cason Wallace is coming off a summer in which he landed a five-year, $139 million contract extension. He averaged 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.3 steals while shooting 40.0% from the field and 30.0% from the three-point line.

The OKC Thunder’s general manager, Sam Presti, spoke to the media at a press conference and addressed both players’ extended absence and how it impacts the Thunder’s plans.

“Wish we were here under different circumstances. I want to give everybody a couple of updates on some of the events of last night,” said Presti as he began the press conference.

“First, I just want to talk about Jalen. I was with him last night and this morning. He’s in great spirits and extremely optimistic about the situation. He’s dealing with a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle on the left side.

“This is an injury that we generally see more in football players. I’ve spent a lot of time speaking to different doctors, his agents, our organization, and his family. It’s a surgical situation. That’s the way you deal with this type of injury.

“We’ll have a timeline for everybody once we get through the surgery. I can’t really give you that right now because it would be inappropriate. We have to see where we are after that’s done,” Sam Presti said.

“As I said before, Dub, as everybody knows, is as tough as they come. He’s an elite competitor and was, even last night, just miraculous in terms of his outlook and the way he’s looking forward to attacking this. We’re going to be with him the entire way.

“We also got some tough news on Cason Wallace last night. He has a left labral tear in his shoulder. Again, that’s going to be a surgical situation as well. We’ll have to determine the timeline after the surgery. We’re going through the process right now to determine the next steps.

“The same thing goes for Cason. I think everybody knows he’s a total warrior and probably would have gone back into the game if we had let him. Obviously, it was a tough night last night.”

“There’s no way to paint that differently. I like to say, and we say within our walls all the time, that there’s a difference between being positive and being optimistic,” Presti further added.

“I’m not going to sit up here and say this is exactly where we want to be or how we’d like things to be. At the same time, we’re extremely optimistic about the recovery for both players. Most importantly, things could have been a lot worse.”

“In these types of situations, it’s important to take stock, step back, and realize we’re dealing with people. We’re dealing with the greatest athletes in the world. They’re going to be back out there. They’ll be playing for our team and representing our city and state in short order.

“As an organization, we also talk a lot about the difference between reacting and responding. It’s really our job to respond to these types of things. Unfortunately, we have a lot of practice responding to these situations.

“Listen, I’ve said this from the day I got here: there’s no silver platter here. As an organization, and as a city and a community, this is what we’re built for. This is the kind of thing that gets thrown at you here, and you just plow right through it. You walk through punches and step over roadblocks. I think our guys are ready to do that.

“It’s certainly disappointing. I don’t want to sugarcoat that for anybody, but I think it’s inside all of us that we’re ready to take the next step and figure out what’s next,” Sam Presti admitted.

“The last thing I thought I’d say is that people talk all the time about how Oklahoma City is one of the best places, if not the best place, to play. A lot of times, when they say that, they think about how it’s the greatest place when everything is firing on all cylinders: the crowd is going crazy, the T-shirts are on the seats, it’s warm outside, you’ve got playoff games, and you’re celebrating players winning awards.”

“It really is a great place. But I also think it’s considered one of the best places to play because the fans are awesome when the wind isn’t at your back. That’s something I think is going to be really important for us as we work through the next steps.

“From a community standpoint, and from our fans all around the world, but especially here, I understand how disappointed they are. I understand how hurt they are because they care so much about our players and want everybody to do well. We love them for that reason.

“These types of situations are where you really see the connection between a team and a group of athletes. I’m very confident that, as we take the next steps, we’re going to learn a lot about each other and about our community.”

“But I know how that’s going to end up: it’s going to be a continuous love affair. We’ll wrap our arms around these guys. We’ll get them back and get them healthy.

“But we have a lot of basketball to play in front of us, and we have to put it together and figure out the next steps because this is part of the business we’re in,” Sam Presti concluded.

This is a gruesome blow to the Thunder roster’s key pieces in their championship ambitions. Rumors already suggest the Thunder could look at players like Herb Jones to replace Jalen Williams this season.

Williams’ concerning history could force the front office to make a decision they don’t want to: trade Williams. Meanwhile, the market for Wallace is relatively smaller but similarly active if the Thunder decide to pull the plug to boost championship ambitions.

However, this is clearly not ideal for the Thunder, as they will likely have to take discounts on the deal, which they wouldn’t have to if the players are healthy.

But hopefully, Presti’s words suggest that the front office might be patient and wait until next summer before making any such decision. The Thunder now face their biggest challenge of the season as they attempt to contend for the championship without two key contributors.

While Sam Presti remains optimistic about their recovery, the Oklahoma City Thunder must reassess its immediate plans. For now, patience may be the best approach as the franchise awaits further medical updates. It remains to be seen what the official return timeline will be.
