Lisandro Martinez received supportive chants from Manchester United fans as the defender retained his starting spot five days on from his explosive remarks criticising the club’s hierarchy.

The 28-year-old left jaws on the floor with Tuesday’s comments calling out the club’s lack of summer business and overall ambition after their frustrating 2-0 Champions League loss at Atletico Madrid.

Martinez met with club chiefs and made a publicly apology and he kept his place in the starting line-up for Sunday’s return to Premier League action at Leeds.

“Argentina, Argentina, Argentina” bellowed the away section following some solid defensive play during the early stages at Elland Road, where director of football Jason Wilcox, the primary target of Martinez’s criticism, watched from the stands.

Martinez impressed as part of a back three, offering bite without overstepping the mark, but once again the Argentina centre-back would not see out the match against their Roses rivals.

A tug on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair saw him sent off in April’s 2-1 Old Trafford defeat and this time a knock saw him replaced at the break, with Michael Carrick’s side pegged back in a 1-1 draw.

Chants of “Argentina” were heard again as the players left the field.
