Leeds United have done a pretty god job in recent years of making Elland Road a difficult place for teams to come and play. The stadium has especially come alive on night games, with matches under the floodlights very rarely seeing the hosts beaten, especially in the Daniel Farke era.

Opposing teams talk of the hostile atmosphere, while home fans just celebrate the noise generated by the passionate supporters getting behind their team. With a stadium upgrade coming and the attendance set to rise, it's only going to become more hostile according to Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel, who has been discussing his experiences of playing at the stadium.

The decision by the owners to increase the capacity the way they are doing is different to some clubs who have moved grounds and lost a part of their identity because of it. Unlike what will happen when the new extension is finished at the famous Leeds ground.

"Let me start by saying I absolutely loved playing at Elland Road. It’s hostile, yes, but it’s a great atmosphere to play in. It’s so lively," said Schmeichel, speaking on the Overlap Daily, brought by Sky Bet.

"Obviously, Leeds United don’t like Manchester United and vice versa, and Yorkshire against Lancashire, the War of the Roses, all of that is still impacting football between those two clubs.

“I had a massive dose of it in my first year. We played them in the league on 29th December. We drew them in the FA Cup, to be played on 5th January. We were there ready in our club suits, but the game was called off because the pitch was waterlogged. Then we played them on the 11th in the League Cup, and the FA Cup replay ended up on the 15th.

"So, in two weeks I was there four times and played three, and from that experience I just wanted to come back and play there. It’s fantastic. There’s only one other place where I had the same kind of feeling, and that was Goodison Park.

"I played my first away game at Goodison, and I feel it’s a bit sad, because for me that was what English football was all about. The good news is that it’s still there at Elland Road, and it’s only going to get worse because they’re extending the stadium. It’s going to be more hostile.”
