Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has criticised Harry Maguire after claiming the Manchester United defender should have conceded a penalty.
United drew 1-1 with Leeds at Elland Road as Bryan Mbeumo scored first before Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised shortly after halftime.
The result extended Michael Carrick’s difficult league start with United collecting seven points from their opening seven Premier League matches.
The moment occurred in the 63rd minute when Maguire appeared to pull midfielder Ethan Ampadu down during a corner kick.
Referee Darren England waved play on, and VAR did not recommend a review, prompting Hackett to question both decisions publicly.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, as reported by give me sport, Hackett called Maguire a “serial offender,” alleging he uses his arms illegally at set pieces.
He argued Maguire’s challenge warranted a penalty and said VAR should have intervened to let England review the footage pitchside.
Hackett said Maguire had committed a foul challenge and England should have awarded a penalty kick during that corner incident.
Hackett criticised England for not booking Ampadu after a challenge on Mbeumo, which he considered reckless and worthy of caution.
Hackett suggested fatigue may have affected England after he served as VAR during Liverpool’s win over Brentford’s league match yesterday.
He cited two red cards in that match, arguing officials need recovery time between demanding appointments to maintain standards consistently.
United must now prepare for their fixtures while Carrick faces pressure to improve results amid scrutiny of the team’s performances.
