Mercedes chief Toto Wolff made a bold prediction about Kimi Antonelli last year.

No one has shown more confidence in Kimi Antonelli than Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who handed the Italian driver a Formula 1 seat, Lewis Hamilton’s old seat nonetheless, as a teenager.

Antonelli is now a champion-elect in 2026 with a 102-point advantage at the top of the F1 standings with only six Grands Prix remaining. He is set to become the sport’s youngest-ever champion.

Kimi Antonelli has outperformed Toto Wolff’s prediction

Despite extreme excitement about his potential, Antonelli has still managed to exceed expectations.

In just his second year on the F1 grid, he is on track to claim his first World Championship.

In December 2025, Toto Wolff predicted that it could take until 2030 before Mercedes saw Antonelli at the peak of his powers.

“When do we expect him to peak? Three, five years from now. And that’s the time we need to give him.” – Wolff on Antonelli in 2025.

It has not even been a year since Wolff made that prediction, and already he can start planning the celebrations for when, not if, Antonelli becomes world champion this season.

Wolff always knew Antonelli had world champion potential, but a title in his second year in the sport proves the 20-year-old is better than anyone expected, even his biggest supporters.

Kimi Antonelli is only getting started in F1

Antonelli took the first opportunity he saw to win the F1 title. Mercedes were confident their W17 challenger was ready to compete for the title, but that led many to predict George Russell as champion.

But Antonelli has dominated his teammate this season, and he is still very much a raw talent.

Wolff’s prediction still stands true – Antonelli may not peak until 2030.

But if he is already winning championships aged 20, then rivals should be worried about his ability to dominate the sport in years to come.
