Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior faces an escalating challenge to retain his regular starting role under manager José Mourinho, with recent performances and a four-match domestic ban compounding a prolonged scoring drought, according to reports in Diario AS.

The Suspension and Standing in the Squad

Vinícius is currently serving a four-match suspension in La Liga following an expulsion against Villarreal, which stemmed from pulling an opponent’s hair and aggressively confronting the referee, as detailed by Associated Press. The absence began during Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu. The ban rules the Brazilian out of upcoming domestic fixtures, including the Clásico against Barcelona on October 25, 2026, a match scheduled for a 21:00 CET kickoff (15:00 ET, 14:00 local Mexico time) in enemy territory, as outlined by Sports Illustrated. The suspension also sidelines him for fixtures against Racing de Santander and Valencia.

Mourinho addressed questions regarding the forward’s untouchable status in the starting XI ahead of a UEFA Champions League fixture against RB Leipzig. Intocable sólo es el escudo. No me gusta este concepto de jugador intocable. Lo que hace a un jugador intocable es su rendimiento en el campo… Mourinho stated in a press conference reported by Diario AS. The manager has steadily reduced the player’s minutes, leaving Vinícius without a full 90-minute appearance across his last six outings.

Statistical Drought and Diomande’s Rise

The forward’s struggles extend beyond disciplinary trouble into a severe lack of efficiency. Records show 53 days have passed without a goal for Real Madrid, dating back to an August 26, 2026 fixture against Real Sociedad. During that span, Vinícius has registered 19 shots without beating an opposing goalkeeper, being turned away by shot-stoppers including Alfonso Herrero, Aarón Escandell, Josep Martínez, Emil Audero, Iván Villar, Jan Oblak, Péter Gulácsi, and Pierluigi Gollini.

Compounding the pressure is the immediate impact of newcomer Yan Diomandé. During the 4-1 win over Sevilla, Diomandé contributed a goal and three assists, filling the void left by Vinícius’s suspension. Statistical breakdowns indicate Diomandé has recorded significantly more successful dribbles than the Brazilian despite playing considerably fewer minutes this season.

Upcoming Champions League Test Against RB Leipzig

While domestic fixtures remain closed to him, Vinícius is eligible for European competition. Real Madrid sits in the top eight of the Champions League league phase with a perfect record, hosting RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabéu on October 21, 2026, at 21:00 CET (15:00 ET, 13:00 Mexico time), with broadcasting coverage via Paramount+ and Movistar+, according to scheduling data published by Sports Illustrated.

Whether Mourinho deploys the struggling winger against the German side or preserves him alongside other tactical options remains unresolved ahead of kickoff.

La Liga Standings and Match Context

Real Madrid’s 4-1 triumph over Sevilla featured goals from Arda Güler, Yan Diomandé, and a brace from Kylian Mbappé. The victory lifted the club to third place in the La Liga table with 22 points, trailing Atlético de Madrid and league leaders Barcelona, who hold 27 points. Following the result against Sevilla, which featured a late goal from Manu Bueno, the team prepares for a sequence of fixtures including a November 4 match against AEK Athens in the Champions League.
