Adam Masina has ended his playing career at the age of 32, bringing his time with Morocco to a close after featuring in the country’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, according to several Moroccan sources.
The former Morocco international, who won 28 caps, officially announced his retirement on Wednesday. He is expected to begin coaching with Italian fourth-tier club Progresso Calcio, according to Corriere di Bologna.
Masina was regarded by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as one of the players who helped Morocco secure the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.
He played in the tournament as an established member of the team, although he did not start either of the first two group matches. Initially third in the defensive pecking order under former Morocco manager Walid Regragui, Masina was brought into the starting line-up after Romain Saiss suffered a recurrence of his injury and Jawad El Yamiq endured a disappointing performance in Morocco’s third group game.
The defender then formed a centre-back partnership with Nayef Aguerd from that point through to the final. Morocco lost the match on the pitch but were awarded victory two months later following a decision by the Appeal Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
That final proved to be Masina’s last appearance for the Atlas Lions. He will not be selected by Mohamed Ouahbi for either the 2026 World Cup or the final international camp scheduled for September-October.
Masina came through the academy at Bologna before playing for Giacomense, Watford, Udinese and Torino, the club he represented most recently.
His career changed significantly after he sustained a serious cruciate ligament injury at the end of August 2022. Since then, the 1.92m defender has continued to suffer from fitness problems.
Torino terminated his contract at the beginning of February, while Masina had been dealing with a hip contusion since the end of January.
The next step in his career is expected to come on the coaching side, with Progresso Calcio set to provide the former defender with an opportunity to begin working as part of its staff in Italy’s fourth tier.
