Lisandro Martinez’s public criticism of Manchester United’s leadership was reportedly driven in part by the decision to start 20-year-old Aiden Heaven against Atletico.
The defender spoke out after Manchester United’s 0-2 defeat by the Spanish side, blaming the club’s management for the team’s difficulties at the start of the season.
Martinez said the squad had not been strengthened sufficiently during the summer transfer window, leaving manager Michael Carrick without the resources he needed.
According to The Sun, the Argentina international was particularly angered that Carrick had been forced to select Heaven in an unfamiliar position for such an important match. The young defender started on the left side of the defence against Atletico.
Martinez’s comments have continued to attract attention in England, with his criticism of Manchester United’s leadership at the centre of the discussion.
