What if and The Way Forward: How we could have avoided Madrid and PSG Defeats? | Barca Blaugranes

I think the main reason we lost to PSG and Madrid was a lack of freshness. Against Betis, we should have started Bernal or Gavi and rotated Pedri/Rodri directly after 45 minutes. Or we should have rotated all key players after the 55th minute, when Betis received a red card. Balde and Farinas could have come on then to ensure others were rested. Managing our key players' minutes will be a major reason for our progression in the Champions League. If all players are fresh and well-rested, I am sure no one can beat Barca. Flick will need to start trusting players beyond the best 11 to play in matches where we have already won.

Next, our major issue: signing a new center-back. While I understand fans' demand to sign an elite LCB like Bastoni to solve our defensive issues, I would rather not put all our eggs in one basket. Financially, I don't think Laporta or Deco would go crazy and spend €60 million on 1 center-back. At this price, I would only trust Gabriel, Gvardiol, Guehi, Ruben Dias, or Saliba.

I'd rather sign 3 CBs for €60 million than 1 Elite one to diversify our risk: Natan for €30 million and Nijstad and Arthur Dias for another combined €30 million. Spending all our money on a single CB is too risky for Barcelona. Soon, Christensen will also leave for another team next season, leaving us with only Cubarsi and Martin as primary CBs.

In the coming winter transfer window, we should sign Ruud Nijstad or Arthur Dias for up to €15 million, if we are strapped financially. They can be played against La Liga teams to rest Cubarsi and Martin. If we get a decent fee for either Balde or FDJ in winter, we can target an elite LCB signing for €50-60 million.

Personally, to complete our team, I think we need reinforcements in the positions below (In order of priority):

  1. 2 or 3 Center Backs (Max. Budget: €70-80 million): Bastoni; Nico Schlotterbeck; Natan; Ruud Nijstad; Arthur Dias; Lukeba; Evan Ndicka; Finn Jeltsch; Jarell Quansah

  2. 1 Proven Striker (Max. Budget: €50-70 million): I personally like Vangelis Pavlidis and Kroupi. To provide forward depth in case of injuries or as a rotation option.

  3. 1 Semi-Proven Full Back (Max. Budget: €30-50 million): Preferably someone who can play at both LB and RB. David Raum looks like an exciting free agent. Iván Fresneda is also a decent option.

To make the required signings, I think that we will need to sell the following players:

  1. Goalkeeper: Ter Stegen (On a free transfer) and Szczęsny (Retirement at season's end).

  2. Defense: Balde (min. €50 million), Araujo (min. €55 million), and Kounde (only if we receive an offer of €70 million or more).

  3. Midfield: We are currently most stacked in this position. Despite his good performances, FDJ can be sold for €60 million or more. We will be left with Rodri, Pedri, Bernal, Gavi, and Farinas, who can more than provide the required depth.

  4. Attack: Dani Olmo only if he requests to leave and Bayern sends us an offer of at least €70 million. I'd like to keep him, and I think Olmo wants to stay as well.
