Lionel Messi continued his impressive goalscoring form in Major League Soccer (MLS), netting twice as Inter Miami defeated Atlanta United 3-1 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday.

The Argentina legend produced two second-half goals within four minutes to help the Herons secure their third consecutive victory and strengthen their position in the Eastern Conference.

Inter Miami took the lead through German Berterame in the 45th minute, with Messi involved in the build-up to the opening goal.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner then doubled his side’s advantage in the 56th minute after cutting inside from the right flank and exchanging passes with Berterame.

Messi beat an Atlanta defender before directing a low effort beyond goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos.

Messi Completes His Brace

Four minutes later, the 39-year-old grabbed his second of the encounter after receiving a pass from Luis Suarez, beating his marker and finishing past Hoyos.

Former Inter Miami forward Fafa Picault subsequently reduced the deficit for Atlanta United from the penalty spot, but the hosts were unable to mount a comeback.

Speaking after the encounter, Inter Miami manager Kily Gonzalez expressed his admiration for Messi’s continued brilliance despite his advancing age.

According to GOAL, Gonzalez said: “He never ceases to amaze the world.”

“I mean, I honestly can’t believe that a guy like him, at 39 years old, is doing what he’s doing. And what makes me happiest is seeing that he’s truly happy. Because he’s happy, he gives everything he has. He enjoys himself and feels right at home.”

The brace took Messi’s tally to 25 league goals this season, moving him six clear of his nearest challenger in the MLS Golden Boot race.

He also has 15 assists, drawing level with Los Angeles FC forward Son Heung-min at the top of the league’s assists chart.

Messi has now registered at least 15 assists in three consecutive MLS campaigns, becoming the first player in the competition’s history to achieve the feat.

His two goals against Atlanta also increased his career tally to 936, leaving him 64 short of the 1,000-goal milestone.

Gonzalez believes the former Paris Saint-Germain forward has what it takes to reach that remarkable landmark.

“Yes, I believe he’ll reach 1,000 goals,” Gonzalez said.

The Inter Miami boss explained that Messi’s determination to set and achieve new targets gives him confidence that the Argentine can reach four figures before retiring.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s victory ensured Inter Miami remained second in the Eastern Conference standings, behind leaders Nashville.

Atlanta United, managed by former Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino, occupy 14th position and face a difficult challenge in their bid to qualify for the playoffs.

Messi has now registered a goal contribution in 13 consecutive matches and scored four goals in three appearances since retiring from international football earlier this month.

With their playoff qualification already secured, Inter Miami will turn their attention to next Saturday’s MLS encounter against New York Red Bulls as they look to extend their winning run.
