FirstBank is set to build on its sports sponsorship legacy with the 65th Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship, scheduled to be held at the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 in November, organisers of the tournament have revealed.
The tournament, which is the longest-running golf tournament in Nigeria, promises to be an unforgettable showcase of talent, drawing the continent’s finest amateur golfers to battle for glory and valuable global ranking points at the highbrow Ikoyi Club.
Last year, Osun-based Babatunde Oyalami stole the show, winning the tournament’s coveted trophy after grossing 231 over 54 holes. Oyalami carded an opening 78, a second-day score of 75 and a closing 78 to win the 64th edition by three shots.
Inspired by the feat, Oyalami, like many others before him, now eyes a pro career in golf. Recognised by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and The R&A, the status also allows amateur golfers to earn World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.
While the golf community looks forward to the coming championship, the sponsor, FirstBank, pledges to continue impacting the socioeconomic development of the country across various sports endeavours.
