Sheffield Wednesday predicted XI vs Cambridge United as three summer signings return
Sheffield Wednesday will be targeting a return to winning ways when they welcome Cambridge United to Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon.
Sheffield Wednesday will begin life without Henrik Pedersen when they host Cambridge United in League One at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening.
Pedersen was sacked by the Owls on Sunday, less than 24 hours after overseeing a 2-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers at the Club Doncaster Sports Village. Wednesday produced another flat and uninspiring display against their South Yorkshire rivals, prompting the club’s hierarchy to decide that a change was necessary.
First-team coach Matt Hamshaw has been placed in caretaker charge and will oversee the visit of the U’s, who will also be looking to return to winning ways after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Plymouth Argyle at the weekend.
Ahead of the visit of the U’s, Hamshaw will welcome midfielder Callum Slattery back into contention after he missed the trip to Doncaster through suspension. Meanwhile, the likes of Reece James and Harry Gray will be pushing for recalls.
Here is how The Star thinks Wednesday could line up...
1. GK: Ashley Maynard-Brewer With Joe Lumley set to miss a fourth consecutive game due to a rib injury, Maynard-Brewer is expected to continue between the sticks. Having conceded four goals in his last two appearances, he will be keen to add to the clean sheet he kept against AFC Wimbledon in the Owls’ most recent home game. | Steve Ellis Photo Sales
2. RB: Yan Valery Having established himself as the first-choice right-back this season, he is expected to retain his place against Cambridge. However, like almost all of his teammates, he will need to produce a better performance than he has in the last two games. | Steve Ellis Photo Sales
3. CB: Liam Cooper Arguably Wednesday’s best player so far this season, Cooper is one of the few players to have emerged with credit from the recent run of games. He has been a dependable presence, leading by example both on and off the pitch. On current form, he is one of the first names on the teamsheet. | Getty Images Photo Sales
4. CB: Sil Swinkels Having been sidelined since August with a hamstring injury, Swinkels was named among the substitutes at Doncaster, suggesting he is close to a return to action. If fit enough to start, he should come into the back four to provide Wednesday with a fresh option. Photo Sales

5. LB: Max Lowe Lowe made his first start since August against Doncaster, slotting in at left-sided centre-back before Wednesday switched to a back four less than 20 minutes into the contest after conceding two early goals. Nobody emerged from the Doncaster defeat with much credit, but Wednesday know they have a quality operator in Lowe when he is at his best. 6. CM: Billy Mitchell Mitchell returned to the starting XI against Doncaster and provided a sense of urgency in the second half as Wednesday tried to fight their way back into the contest. Capable of dictating the tempo and helping to control possession, he could retain his place in the starting XI for the clash with the U’s. | Getty Images Photo Sales
7. CM: Barry Bannan If Wednesday are to rediscover their mojo, they need Bannan to return to his best. The Scot has struggled for form so far this season, failing to produce the same level of quality that he has consistently shown throughout his Wednesday career. On his day, he remains the Owls’ most gifted player, and they need him to start shining again. | Getty Images Photo Sales
8. RM: Kieran Morrison After starting at left wing-back at the weekend, Morrison quickly found himself back in his natural role following a disastrous start from the Owls. However, like several of his teammates, he struggled to impose himself on proceedings. Despite that, he is talented enough to make his mark. He just needs a consistent run of games on the right wing. | Getty Images Photo Sales

9. CAM: Callum Slattery Having missed the defeat to Doncaster through suspension, Slattery is available again for Cambridge’s visit to S6, and he is highly likely to return to the starting XI. Having started on the right against AFC Wimbledon and Notts County, the prospect of Morrison starting in that role could see Slattery reinstated to the No.10 position. 10. LM: Harry Gray Having been left out of the squad at the weekend, Gray will be eager to force his way back into the starting XI. The Leeds United loanee is the most natural option to start on the left wing amid Louie Barry’s ongoing absence. Gray was outstanding in Wednesday’s most recent home game, getting himself on the scoresheet in the 5-0 win over Wimbledon. 11. ST: Davis Keillor-Dunn Deciding who should lead Wednesday’s attack against Cambridge could be a difficult decision for Hamshaw. Ali Al-Hamadi struggled to make his mark on his first start for the Owls at the weekend, while Mason Burstow has struggled for form since arriving at Hillsborough. Keillor-Dunn, therefore, could be tasked with leading the line, particularly if Slattery returns to the starting XI and occupies the No.10 role. | Steve Ellis Photo Sales
