Christian Mbilli brought the WBC hardware to Thursday’s final presser, yet Canelo Alvarez clearly owned the spotlight. The promotion pushed Canelo’s return so hard that Mbilli’s promoter, Camille Estephan, called out the entire spectacle for treating his fighter like an extra in somebody else’s victory lap.
Richard Schaefer delivered the most telling moment while running through the early start time. He envisioned Canelo’s supporters catching the bout before trick-or-treating with their kids, casually penciling in a celebration as part of their evening plans. Mbilli sat right there holding the belt, unblemished record intact, listening to organizers talk about the challenger winning like it was guaranteed on the itinerary.
Estephan did not let that slide.
“Christian has the full belief and conviction that he will come out still champion and take the throne from Canelo. We are not here to be in this fight. We are not here to be part of the Canelo story. It’s very tilted towards Canelo this, Canelo that. With all due respect, we are here to write our own story,” Estephan said.
The press questions followed that identical script. Mbilli faced inquiries about how he planned to crack an iron chin and manage the magnitude of the moment. Canelo, meanwhile, discussed his relationship with Turki Alalshikh and absorbed credit for daring to take on such a dangerous puncher.
Star power drives the box office, no doubt. Still, marquee value does not turn fight night into a foregone conclusion. Estephan had every right to call foul on a setup that acted like it does.
The event exposed a glaring disconnect. Promoters spent weeks billing Mbilli as an unstoppable force built to push Canelo, yet the surrounding hype barely entertained the idea of him walking away victorious.
Estephan can’t control who moves tickets. What he can do is demand respect for a champion instead of watching him get sidelined until the next headline. Now it is on Mbilli to crash the party on Saturday and claim the whole script for himself.
