Turkish league: Osimhen brace fires Galatasaray to derby victory over Fenerbahce

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen scored twice as Galatasaray defeated city rivals Fenerbahce 2-1 in a thrilling Turkish Super Lig derby on Monday, helping the defending champions return to the top of the league table.

The Super Eagles forward delivered a decisive first-half performance at RAMS Park in Istanbul, scoring in the 29th and 44th minutes to give Galatasaray a two-goal advantage before the interval.

The victory earned Galatasaray three crucial points in the ninth round of the league season and strengthened their position in the title race, while Fenerbahce were left to rue their missed opportunity to close the gap on their rivals.

Osimhen strikes twice in first half

Osimhen opened the scoring in the 29th minute after receiving a pass from Baris Alper Yilmaz before firing into the net to put Galatasaray ahead.

The Nigerian striker continued to trouble the Fenerbahce defence with his movement and attacking threat, and his efforts paid off again just before half-time.

In the 44th minute, the 27-year-old headed the ball into the net following Davinson Sanchez’s effort to double Galatasaray’s lead and send the home supporters into celebration.

His second goal gave Galatasaray a comfortable cushion going into the break and placed the hosts in a strong position to secure victory in the highly anticipated Istanbul derby.

Fenerbahce fight back after break

Fenerbahce returned for the second half determined to get back into the contest and reduced the deficit in the 62nd minute through Irfan Can Kahveci.

The midfielder produced an acrobatic overhead kick to beat the Galatasaray defence and give the visitors renewed hope of salvaging a result from the encounter.

The goal increased the pressure on the hosts, as Fenerbahce pushed forward in search of an equaliser during the closing stages.

However, Galatasaray held firm to protect their advantage and secure a 2-1 victory over their city rivals.

Despite Fenerbahce’s second-half response, Osimhen’s first-half double ultimately proved decisive in settling the contest.

Galatasaray return to league summit

The result took Galatasaray back to the top of the Turkish Super Lig standings with 22 points from nine matches.

Fenerbahce, meanwhile, remained on 16 points, leaving them six points behind their rivals following the derby defeat.

The result represented an important boost for Galatasaray in their pursuit of another league title, particularly given the significance of matches against direct domestic rivals.

Derby victories often carry additional weight because of the fierce competition between the two Istanbul clubs, whose meetings attract considerable attention from supporters across Turkey and beyond.

Osimhen underlines importance to Galatasaray

Osimhen’s performance further highlighted his importance to Galatasaray, with the Nigerian international delivering the goals that made the difference in a closely contested encounter.

His ability to find the net twice in the first half gave his side the platform to withstand Fenerbahce’s second-half pressure.

The striker has remained one of the key attacking figures for both Galatasaray and the Super Eagles, with his finishing ability and physical presence making him a major threat to opposing defences.

The brace against Fenerbahce will further strengthen his standing among Galatasaray supporters, particularly as the club seeks to maintain its position at the top of the Turkish Super Lig.

With the season continuing, Galatasaray will look to build on the derby triumph and maintain their momentum, while Fenerbahce will aim to recover from the setback and keep their title ambitions on track.
