‘Michael Essien is the greatest Ghanaian footballer ever’ – Former Nigeria star Peter Odemwingie

Former Nigeria international Peter Osaze Odemwingie has named Michael Essien as the greatest Ghanaian footballer of all time, placing the former Chelsea midfield powerhouse ahead of several iconic Black Stars legends.

Speaking during a TikTok Live session with Bryt FM, Odemwingie was asked to identify the finest player Ghana has ever produced. While acknowledging the remarkable achievements of several Black Stars greats, the former Super Eagles forward ultimately chose Essien as his top pick.

Odemwingie praised a number of Ghanaian legends, including three-time African Footballer of the Year Abedi Pele, former Leeds United striker Tony Yeboah, Sulley Muntari, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer Asamoah Gyan, and the Ayew brothers, André and Jordan.

Despite the impressive list of names, the former Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion striker believes Essien’s unique qualities as a complete midfielder set him apart.

“Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari—they were all great players. The Ayew brothers, of course, and Asamoah Gyan as well. But I would give it to Essien because he was a defensive midfielder who could also score goals. So, I would choose him,” Odemwingie said.

Essien enjoyed one of the most decorated careers in Ghanaian football history. After making his name with Bastia and Olympique Lyonnais in France, he completed a then-record move to Chelsea in 2005, where he became one of the Premier League’s most dominant midfielders.

During his nine-year spell at Stamford Bridge, Essien won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the League Cup and the UEFA Champions League, earning widespread acclaim for his powerful tackling, relentless work rate, versatility and spectacular long-range strikes.

He also spent time on loan at Real Madrid under José Mourinho before later playing for AC Milan, Panathinaikos, Persib Bandung and Sabail FK, building a distinguished career across Europe and Asia.

On the international stage, Essien earned over 50 caps for the Black Stars and represented Ghana at two FIFA World Cups and multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, playing a pivotal role in the country’s rise as one of Africa’s leading football nations during the 2000s.

Following his retirement, the 43-year-old transitioned into coaching and currently serves as an assistant coach at Danish Superliga side FC Nordsjælland, where he continues to develop the next generation of football talent.

Odemwingie’s endorsement reflects the immense respect Essien commands across the football world. Although players such as Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and André Ayew are widely regarded among Ghana’s greatest-ever footballers, the former Nigerian international believes Essien’s rare blend of defensive excellence, attacking threat and success at the highest level makes him the standout choice.
