Manchester City could face a huge punishment from UEFA if their appeal against the guilty verdict on 114 financial breaches fails.
The English club have been locked in a legal battle with the Premier League since February 2023, and were on the receiving end of a scathing statement from the league along with the guilty verdict in September 2026.
Man City are accused of serious breaches of Premier League financial rules over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018. As an appeal has been lodged and City maintain their innocence, everyone is now waiting for the final outcome.
Should the guilty verdict stick, the next bridge to cross will be what sanctions will be imposed on the eight-time Premier League champions. Sanctions discussed include large fines, transfer bans, point deductions, titles being stripped and even relegation.
Immediate action will be taken by the Premier League as the club's future in English football will take priority. However, it will also leave UEFA in a position where a decision must be made.
City could theoretically work their way back into the Premier League if they are relegated initially, and then go back to competing for Champions League, Europa League or Conference League qualification.
But Colombian journalist Cesar Augusto Londono has claimed on X that Europe's governing body UEFA are ready to impose a lengthy ban on the 2023 Champions League winners.
"UEFA is reportedly close to announcing that, if Manchester City is found guilty following its appeal, it will be expelled from all European competitions for a period of 7 to 10 years. Under that measure, it would be unable to participate in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. The club was found guilty of 115 financial violations in the first instance."
If that is the action taken, it would mean City wouldn't be eligible to play in any European football for up to a decade, regardless of their Premier League punishment.
While any potential sanctions will have to wait until the appeal is heard, people within the media and football world have already been discussing what they've heard.
TalkSPORT presenter and former Scotland international Alan Brazil shared what he'd been told about City's Premier League punishment. Speaking in early October, Brazil said a 60-point deduction had been suggested to him:
"I’m hearing a 60-point deduction, which will please people and still give City a chance of surviving.
"I don’t know whether it’s this season. I can’t see how that can be this season because of the timing, when they get it through it’ll be too late. "Is it next season? But they are talking about a 60-point deduction."
