Harry Kane has reached the summit of world football after winning the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or following an extraordinary season for Bayern Munich and England.
The 33-year-old received football’s most prestigious individual award at a ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday, 26 October. His victory ended England’s 25-year wait for a men’s Ballon d’Or winner, with Michael Owen having last claimed the prize in 2001.
Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona star Lamine Yamal in the final voting. Rodri and Lionel Messi completed the top five.
The England captain also collected the Gerd Müller Trophy as the leading striker of the 2025/26 season, completing an unforgettable evening in his home city.
Kane enjoyed the most prolific club campaign of his career, scoring 61 goals in 51 competitive appearances for Bayern Munich.
His total included 36 Bundesliga goals and 14 strikes in the Champions League. Moreover, his goals helped Bayern win the Bundesliga and DFB Cup double.
Kane produced one of the defining performances of the campaign during the German cup final. He scored all three goals as Bayern defeated VfB Stuttgart 3-0, becoming only the fourth player to record a hat-trick in a German cup final.
However, his contribution extended beyond club football.
Kane scored six goals at the 2026 World Cup and captained England to the semi-finals. Overall, he finished the campaign with an astonishing 73 goals for club and country.
As a result, voters chose Kane ahead of Mbappé, who produced a remarkable World Cup campaign, and Yamal, who played an influential role in Spain’s success.
Kane appeared emotional after his name was announced in London.
The striker thanked his family, wife Kate, teammates, coaches and the clubs that supported him throughout his career. He also reflected on the setbacks that shaped his journey from an uncertain Tottenham Hotspur youngster to the world’s best player.
Kane did not emerge as an immediate superstar. Tottenham sent him on loan to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City as he fought to establish himself.
Eventually, he became Tottenham’s record goalscorer and one of the Premier League’s most feared forwards. However, major team trophies repeatedly escaped him during his time in North London.
His 2023 move to Bayern Munich therefore represented a major career decision. The German giants paid a club-record fee to sign a player who had already turned 30, but Kane quickly justified their investment.
He has since developed into more than a traditional centre-forward. Although his finishing remains his greatest weapon, Kane also creates opportunities, drops into midfield and links attacks with intelligent passing.
Kane became the first Bayern Munich player to win the Ballon d’Or since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claimed the award in 1981.
He now joins a legendary Bayern group that includes Rummenigge, Gerd Müller and Franz Beckenbauer.
Bayern officials described the achievement as a proud moment for the club. They praised Kane’s goals, leadership, professionalism and influence inside the dressing room.
The club will honour its star striker before its DFB Cup match against Magdeburg. Further recognition will follow ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga showdown with Borussia Dortmund.
Meanwhile, Kane’s teammate Michael Olise also enjoyed an impressive Ballon d’Or result by finishing ninth.
Kane’s victory carries considerable significance for English football.
No Englishman had won the men’s Ballon d’Or since Owen defeated Raul and Oliver Kahn in the 2001 vote. Before that, Kevin Keegan won the prize in 1978 and 1979, while Bobby Charlton claimed it in 1966.
Kane has now added his name to that celebrated list.
The award also strengthens his claim as one of England’s greatest players. He already stands as his country’s record goalscorer and continues to extend a remarkable international record.
Earlier in October, Kane reached 125 England appearances and increased his international total to 91 goals. Despite turning 33, his performances suggest that he remains capable of leading the national team for several more years.
For much of his career, critics questioned whether Kane could win the game’s biggest trophies. His individual quality was rarely disputed, but the absence of major silverware remained part of every conversation about his legacy.
That discussion has now changed completely.
Kane has won trophies in Germany, delivered one of the greatest goalscoring seasons of the modern era and captured the Ballon d’Or.
After years of goals, near misses and relentless consistency, Harry Kane can finally call himself the best footballer in the world.
