Spurs youngsters Mathys Tel and Mateus Fernandes have opened up on what Tottenham’s latest victory over Chelsea means to them.

Tottenham Hotspur became the first side to beat their London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this season following their 2-0 triumph on Saturday evening.

The Lilywhites also became the first team to keep the Blues quiet in a Premier League match, shutting out Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and co.

It was not the only record broken, as Saturday’s victory also marked Spurs’ first win at the Bridge in eight years and only their second in the Premier League era.

It was indeed a spirited performance inspired by two youngsters – Mathys Tel and Mateus Fernandes. Tel grabbed the second goal and was described as the match winner by Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi.

The Italian was full of praise for Tel and his winger partner Mohammed Kudus. He said: “Mathys Tel played very well. I think we won the game with two wingers, Kudus and Mathys, they made the difference.”

Fernandes also earned praise from his manager, with De Zerbi describing him as the best player on the pitch: “Mateus Fernandes maybe was one of the best players on the pitch like Mathys Tel. Archie Gray is younger, but he is older as a mentality. I am very, very happy.

“I love watching my players fighting on the pitch. But Mateus Fernandes played 90 minutes with a big, big quality. I want to see Mateus Fernandes with personality. I want to see Fernandes enjoy with the ball. Even if he can make a mistake, it does not matter. It is not a problem, a mistake. But I want to see this personality from my team.”

Mathys Tel reflects on Tottenham’s famous Chelsea win

The two stars of the show at Stamford Bridge also opened up on the encounter when speaking to Sky Sports. Tel revealed how special the moment was and reflected on his decisive goal.

Asked whether it was a special moment, he said: “It’s very special because we have come to Chelsea so many times and not got a win. We showed great mentality today and we need to enjoy this win.”

The winger reflected on his brilliant solo effort – almost reminiscent of Heung-min Son – as he surged from his own half, riding challenges from Acheampong and Lacroix before firing hard and low past Penders from outside the box.

Asked about his goal, Tel said it was something special for him. He added: “We created a lot of chances today, we walk out together, the goal is something special for me, I’m happy about it and lets keep pushing now.”

Mateus Fernandes on settling in at Spurs and making history

Fernandes, who was named man of the match after dictating play in midfield, also shared his thoughts with Sky Sports.

The midfielder has managed just four Premier League starts since joining Spurs and has had to remain patient.

However, that has done little to affect him, with Fernandes revealing that he believes in his teammates and remains happy whenever Tottenham win.

He said when asked about settling in at Spurs: “It takes time, I always believe in me and my teammates. We always play well, but when we play like this we’re very happy.”

The 22-year-old was on the right side of history as Spurs ended their eight-year winless run at Stamford Bridge, and he did not hold back in his reaction, stating that he came to change the mentality at the club and wants to beat the top teams.

He added: “We are here to change the club’s mentality, we want to beat the top teams, and make this victory for the fans.”

It’s certainly been an emotional week for the Portuguese, who only became a father a few days ago, and he was quick to thank his family for their support. He concluded: “I want to give a big support to my family, my girlfriend and my new son. I’m very happy like I said, something I have worked to be ready for.”
