Liverpool are reportedly “interested” in bringing former favourite Trent Alexander-Arnold back to the club, according to a stunning new transfer update.
The 28-year-old left the Reds for Real Madrid at the end of the 2024/25 season, deserting his boyhood club because he couldn’t resist the Spanish giants.
Alexander-Arnold’s spell at Madrid hasn’t been a success, though, with starts coming at a premium, including only three in La Liga so far this season.
A return to England has been mooted for the right-back of late, with Jose Mourinho seemingly not considering him an important part of his plans in Spain, and now a new update has dropped.
According to a respected source on X, Liverpool are eyeing a potential shock reunion with Alexander-Arnold, but Chelsea appear to be slightly ahead of them in the pecking order:
“Trent Alexander-Arnold is unhappy at Real Madrid and wants first-team action. According to our sources, CFC will meet his reps to discuss if a wage cut can be agreed. LFC is also interested but the player will need to admit his mistakes in leaving Liverpool previously.”
Liverpool supporters are likely to be split when it comes to the Reds’ re-signing Alexander-Arnold, with some burning their bridges with him, but others seeing his quality and being happy to see him return.
For all of his ability, though, the negatives outweigh the positives with the Englishman, with too many managers having doubts over him, which can’t simply be a coincidence.
Thomas Tuchel didn’t even select him for England’s 2026 World Cup squad, despite a lack of options there, while the likes of Xabi Alonso and Mourinho have struggled to be convinced by him at Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold also isn’t getting any younger, and injuries have crept in more and more, so he would feel like a risky addition, especially as he would likely demand big wages.
Instead, Liverpool should look at younger alternative options at right-back in 2027, rather than taking a big gamble on a signing that could easily backfire.
There must surely be a part of Alexander-Arnold that wishes he had never left the Reds.
