Manchester United’s winless run continued on Sunday as Bournemouth overpowered them 3-0 at Old Trafford while Liverpool comfortably beat Brighton 2-0 at Anfield in the Premier League.
Bournemouth created the first opportunities, with Rayan heading over from a corner before Harry Maguire blocked another effort from the Brazilian following a well-worked move.
Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was then forced into action, making a save to deny Evanilson after Rayan's cross found the striker.
United's first chance came through Diogo Dalot, who fired over from a tight angle.
The visitors eventually broke the deadlock shortly before halftime. Following a foul on Ayden Heaven, Justin Kluivert delivered a free kick to the back post, where Rayan fired a low shot past Lammens in the 41st minute.
United almost equalized immediately when Mason Mount played Bryan Mbeumo through, but Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic turned his effort around the post.
Bournemouth doubled their advantage four minutes later after Leny Yoro slipped outside his own penalty area. Adrien Truffert collected the loose ball and set up Tavernier, who finished from close range.
United made a change at halftime as Matheus Cunha came on in an attempt to spark a comeback.
Evanilson thought he had scored a third shortly after the restart, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Lammens then made another important save to deny Rayan, who had broken behind the United defense, before the Belgian goalkeeper stopped another attempt from the Brazilian.
Bournemouth eventually extended their lead when a long ball from Lewis Cook caught out Lammens, who came out of his penalty area to clear. The windy conditions held up the ball, allowing Evanilson to get past the goalkeeper and score from a tight angle.
United introduced Joshua Zirkzee and Shea Lacey late on but could not find a way back into the match.
The defeat extended Manchester United's winless run, while Bournemouth continued their positive form after beating Sunderland in their previous Premier League match.
Manchester United will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next Saturday.
Brighton had the first major opportunity in the 14th minute when Yasin Ayari fired over from a Gross cut-back.
Liverpool opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Wirtz picked up the loose ball from a Ronald Araujo cross that was half-cleared and fired at goal, with his low strike going in off Gross.
The hosts doubled their advantage before halftime in the 21st minute when a low effort from inside the area took a deflection off Gross and found the net.
Brighton came close to reducing the deficit when Ayari's curling effort struck the post and bounced clear.
Brighton pushed more players forward after the break in search of a way back into the match, creating more space for Liverpool to exploit on the counterattack.
However, the hosts were unable to add a third despite creating further opportunities.
Liverpool maintained their clean sheet to secure a 2-0 victory and extend their winning run to four matches in all competitions.
The result moved Liverpool up to fourth in the Premier League standings.
