Kyren Wilson has admitted he "got a bit angry" before throwing his snooker cue onto the table at the International Championship. Wilson was competing against Liam Highfield in Nanjing, China, when he lost his cool after losing a frame. Highfield moved into a 5-3 lead in a first to six-frame battle. After his opponent made a break of 79 to take the eighth, Wilson got out of his seat and tossed his cue onto the table, where referee Dai Liang was trying to gather the balls.
The official looked alarmed by the incident, but did not say anything to Wilson. Whatever frustration Wilson had inside him appeared to be released, as he came back to win 6-5 with breaks of 51, 127 and 75. However, he has since apologised for his actions, according to his manager and brother Taylor.
A post from TWS Management read: "Out of frustration with how the game is going. Doesn’t make it acceptable or right, that’s why he apologised to the referee after.
"Some players punch tables. Some players throw rests and cues. Some players smash balls around the table. Elite sport frustration. Doesn’t make any of them right. It’s what happens within the moment. Apologise and move on."
Speaking after the match, Wilson admitted he let his temper get the better of him, saying: "He played very strongly today. I think every frame had a high break.
"I find Liam very difficult to play against. I think our styles clash and I play a lot faster. Liam is a little bit more methodical. I got a bit angry at 5-3 and I finished strongly.
"It took eight frames to keep calm, in the ninth I got a bit angry and lost my composure, but it fired me up. Before that I missed one or two balls but afterwards I played well."
Up next for Wilson will be another challenging battle against Ryan Day. The pair will face each other in the round of 32 on Monday, November 2nd.
Wilson will fancy his chances of winning after seeing Judd Trump and Mark Selby be knocked out by Fan Zhengyi and Hossein Vafaei.
