Manchester United's decision to stick with Michael Carrick has backfired after they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds were defeated thanks to second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, with the loss taking them to nine games without a win in all competitions, and just two wins from 13 all season.
Performances and results have been poor, and that led to speculation that Carrick could be removed from his role as manager just months after signing a two-year contract to be upgraded from interim manager. But the club instead decided to stick by him this week, and kept him in the dugout to take on the Blues at Stamford Bridge.
The decision obviously didn't go the way they intended it to, but there were some encouraging signs. United were the better team in the opening 45 minutes and could, and probably should, have been at least two goals to the good at half time.
Chelsea started the second half slowly too before Rogers' fine solo goal, and then five minutes of absolute madness from Lisandro Martinez meant that all United's momentum and any chance of a victory they had went down the toilet.
That isn't something that can be blamed on Carrick, ultimately, and the performance in the first half suggested that the team haven't entirely given up on him as the manager. But the end result, and the form this season, mean it's still probably a job too far for him in the long term.
But while INEOS can try and claim a shallow victory for that, it's quite evident that it shows a much bigger problem at Man Utd than just who is picking the team and leading the training sessions.
Fans have continued to speak out against the board and senior staff at Old Trafford, and Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada were once again present to watch the team blunder on the pitch, and it's obvious now that their involvement in the club is the biggest error that INEOS have made since taking over.
When INEOS arrived at the club, they made it clear that they wanted to have 'the best in class' in place across the club, both on and off the pitch. That simply hasn't come to fruition, and the people brought in have done nothing to help get them closer to it.
Dan Ashworth was brought in and sacked within months due to a clash with the rest of the board's vision, despite them chasing him for several months and paying compensation to get him out of Newcastle. But Sir Jim Ratcliffe did bring in both Wilcox and Berrada, and they've gloriously failed in their jobs.
Both men have previously been at Man City, and that should have been the first red flag to bringing them in. As Peter Schmeichel said this week, they 'hated Man Utd' during their previous jobs, and that isn't something that can just be turned off. United need to have people who understand the culture, history and ethos of the club. and they don't do that.
While Wilcox and Berrada are in place, it doesn't matter who is in the dugout. They don't help make things better, and the quicker they are moved on, the quicker we will see Man Utd begin to go in the right direction.
