Back
Before the China Open late last month, Coco Gauff told reporters her suitcase was already packed to capacity, and her mother had wondered how the gifts waiting in Beijing would fit. Gauff’s solution was to pack an extra bag, a modest but telling bit of foresight considering that her season, as it has for years, will stretch into the final week of the tour calendar.
On Wednesday, Gauff learned she won't be unpacking for a while. She and fellow American Jessica Pegula each secured a place at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, a fifth consecutive appearance for both. The season-ending event is familiar territory by now, and each return adds to a number of milestones that are easy to overlook.
Gauff and Pegula have spent years at the top of the sport together, and string of success that is anything but a happy accident. Few players from the same country have shared the Top 10 for this long, and few have matched it with a run of year-end appearances like theirs. Together, they have become one of the most dominant duos from a single country the sport has seen in decades.
After a season-long race, the world's top players converge in the California desert with the WTA's biggest title still to be won.
Their excellence has become so habitual that you’d be forgiven for overlooking their accomplishments. Showing up atop the rankings week after week and ultimately solidifying a spot in the season-ending field year after year has started to feel like the natural order of things, when in fact the sport has seen very little like it. Here is some statistical perspective:
209 consecutive weeks together in the singles Top 10
Pegula and Gauff have held Top 10 rankings simultaneously for 209 straight weeks. That is more than four years among the sport's leading players, long enough to span multiple seasons without a single weekly update breaking the run.
222 weeks for Pegula, 209 for Gauff
Pegula's individual Top 10 streak stands at 222 consecutive weeks, 13 more than Gauff's. Gauff's entire streak overlaps with their shared run. Pegula reached the Top 10 earlier and has stayed there since.
Four same-country pairs with 200-plus weeks together
Since 1997, only four pairs from the same country have each spent at least 200 consecutive weeks in the Top 10 together:
Gauff and Pegula are the first same-country pair to reach 200 weeks since the Williams sisters did it in 2003.
Five straight WTA Finals appearances
Both players will make a fifth consecutive appearance, covering 2022 through 2026. They are the first American pair to qualify together for five straight editions since Mary Joe Fernandez and Zina Garrison from 1989 to 1993, and the first same-country pair to match that streak since Nathalie Tauziat and Sandrine Testud appeared together from 1997 to 2001.
Five Americans with longer individual streaks
Five Americans have strung together more consecutive appearances than Pegula and Gauff's five. Martina Navratilova leads with 17, followed by Garrison with 12, Davenport with nine, Pam Shriver with seven and Chris Evert with six. Navratilova represented Czechoslovakia in her first two appearances.
Both have found success at the Finals, most memorably in 2024, when Gauff beat Zheng Qinwen in the championship match to capture the title. Pegula has had her own deep runs, reaching the final in 2023 and the semifinals in 2025, and now the two return to Indian Wells together once more.
