Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes couldn’t hide his excitement about marquee free-agent signees Kyle Tucker and Edwin Diaz and their potential impact in 2027.
The Dodgers committed $309 million to Diaz and Tucker ahead of the 2026 season, hoping to bolster their chances of a three-peat.
Both had their own regular-season struggles, but they kept their heads down, worked through it, and now will be relied on in 2027 to contribute more in the regular season.
“So much of that was betting on the true talent of those guys, and while the regular season did not go the way anyone expected, their contributions in the postseason were massive,” Gomes said in his exit interview in response to a question from Dodgers Nation’s Noel Sanchez.
“If that is where we’re looking at, where we end up winning the division with a bye, and those guys are performing at their peak in the postseason, that’s a pretty good outcome for us.
“Really looking forward to next year for those guys.”
Los Angeles will see some notable changes, aimed at shaking up the team and retooling for another title run.
Ideally, Diaz gives the franchise confidence as the shutdown closer that he is meant to be, giving them one less concern.
As for Kyle Tucker, hopefully his offense helps patch up a core that is still aging quickly and eases the pressure to always produce.
With less pressure to add a high-leverage bat, Tucker can ease the pressure to do so.
Diaz and Tucker were worth just 1.0 fWAR combined in 2026, compared with 6.5 fWAR combined in their respective 2025 seasons before joining LA.
A bump to even 4 fWAR would be a big improvement and help the team massively throughout the year.
