Michael Carrick will remain in charge for Manchester United’s blockbuster Premier League showdown against Chelsea on Saturday.

Blown away at over the weekend as they slumped to a woeful 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth, it appeared that Carrick’s emotional walk off the Old Trafford pitch was a final farewell to the United supporters.

While Carrick might have enjoyed a sensational return to the Old Trafford dugout back in January as United booked a bronze medal finish and a lucrative Champions League return, the English icons suddenly find themselves at the heart of an infamous crisis.

The Red Devils might have mustered just a single win from any of their opening eight Premier League appearances this season and they currently hold just a one-point buffer over slipping into the relegation zone.

Leaving club captain Bruno Fernandes as an unused substitute on Sunday following the 32-year-old’s infamous attack on Carrick’s tactics after their 4-1 Champions League drumming against Como last week, it looked like the writing was on the wall for the former Middlesbrough boss.

However, Sky Sports broke the news on Tuesday lunchtime that the Old Trafford hierarchy have shockingly handed Carrick their temporary support and their former midfielder will remain in charge for Saturday’s heavyweight showdown agains historic rivals Chelsea.

Breaking a string of unwanted records since opening up the 2026/27 campaign, both Antonio Conte and ex-Newcastle manager Eddie Howe have been billed as the most likely candidates to replace Carrick.
