Former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos praised manager José Mourinho for a tactical masterclass that propelled Los Blancos past Barcelona at the Camp Nou, shifting the momentum of the La Liga title race. Kroos analyzed the Clásico played on Sunday, stating he had hoped the trend of recent matchups between the two teams could change and highlighting Mourinho as the primary person responsible for the win that kept the white squad’s options alive in the League.

Mourinho Disrupts Barcelona Rhythm with Rigorous Press

Kroos highlighted the strategic blueprint implemented by Mourinho, noting that Real Madrid successfully disrupted Barcelona’s rhythm by applying a rigorous press that visiting teams rarely manage to execute against the Catalan giants. According to the analysis published by Diario AS, the tactical setup forced key Barcelona playmakers such as Pedri and Raphinha into uncharacteristic errors while neutralizing their usual positional dominance. Kroos was surprised by Huijsen marking Fermín and noted that Madrid won almost every duel through greater intensity, defending well as a team and playing excellently for 65 minutes, including during phases like Barcelona’s equalizer when everyone would have signed for a draw.

Shifting Clásico Dynamics and League Implications

By altering that trajectory at the Camp Nou, Madrid revitalized their championship aspirations, with the German adding, Real Madrid and Mourinho were super brave at the Camp Nou and that was a big difference compared to the last Clásicos.

Mbappé and Vinícius Provide Explosive Acceleration for Midfielders

Addressing individual performances, Kroos emphasized the crucial role of Kylian Mbappé in stretching the Barcelona backline, describing elite forwards like Mbappé and the absent Vinícius Júnior as invaluable assets for midfielders due to their explosive acceleration, noting that Mbappé or Vinicius are a gift for the midfielders. They are worth their weight in gold because they are three steps faster than the defenders. While Vinícius missed the fixture, Kroos observed that Vini doesn’t need great technique to do damage, adding that he would have liked to see him face João Cancelo, who leaves a lot of space behind him, and that Vini has to defend like Diomande and Bellingham did. Kroos observed that the team’s overall tactical discipline, combined with emerging connections involving youngsters like Arda Güler—who has a great connection with Mbappé—ensured the visitors maintained a constant threat on the counter-attack. The German midfielder concluded by reflecting on the psychological relief the victory brings to the squad following an arduous stretch of matches, apologizing if his analysis sounded too pro-Madrid while asserting that Madridismo deserved to enjoy themselves after suffering for the past two seasons.
