David Ismail scores two goals on the pitch; Vermont men's hockey nearly takes two in a row against No. 11 Northeastern
The No. 16 University of Vermont men's soccer team battled from a first-half deficit to take down the University of New Hampshire 3-2.
The Catamounts trailed their twin-state America East rivals 2-1, but goals from Phillip Schmidtke and David Ismail lifted the Catamounts to their eventual victory.
"Every America East game is tough, and we've been trying to preach that to your boys and really appreciate and expect that every game is going to be tight," said Vermont men's soccer head coach Adrian Dubois. "Overall, I love the guys' response; what a great second-half attitude. What a way to turn the tides, take advantage of opportunities and never give up."
Ismail scored two of the Catamounts' three goals in the win. The first came in the first half after a replay review showed a New Hampshire player committed a handball in their own box. This led Ismail to bury a penalty kick goal for the initial 1-0 Vermont lead.
Laurin Preuss and David Davilla would score a pair of goals to give New Hampshire the 2-1 lead, but some conversations in the locker room got Vermont back on track for the next 45 minutes.
"Had to kick them in gear a little bit, but I've got incredible leadership that is doing most of the yelling," Dubois said. "They understood that we needed to do a better job going forward of not conceding in the moment and playing to the wind. Second half we scored two and we utilized the wind and we did a good job there."
The Catamounts dominated the shot battle 12-5 in the second half, where their constant pressure eventually led Schmidtke to score off a rebound chance to tie the game back up at 2-2.
Ismail then scored the go-ahead goal after firing with his opposite foot to hit the left side of the net for the 3-2 Vermont lead.
"We wanted to put it on the second post and get a little bump on the post," Ismail said. "I was fortunate enough to get the ball that it went through couple of guys in the box ... when I got it, I knew I had to take the shot first touch and it worked out."
The Catamounts' comeback helps them remain undefeated in America East play at 3-0-1 with three more conference games still left to go on the schedule. Vermont will take on the University of Albany next on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.
The Vermont men's hockey team was close to knocking off No. 11 Northeastern University for the second night in a row but fell just short in overtime. Jonah Aegerter scored the first goal of the game in the second period, but a pair of goals by Ryder Ritcher, including the game winner in overtime, gave the Huskies the 2-1 victory.
"We played a great game, but just didn't go our way that time," said Vermont men's hockey head coach Steve Wiedler. "It leaves a sour taste in your mouth, and it stings, and it's tough. You just want that for the guys ... They did everything right. Very proud of our guys for their response all weekend and definitely something to build off."
The No. 15 Vermont women's hockey team fell just short in their latest match against No. 14 Cornell University in a 1-0 loss. The Big Red swept back-to-back games against the Catamounts after a third-period power-play goal from Rose Dwyer was enough to seal the deal on a win in game two of the weekend series.
The Vermont men's basketball team won its first taste of game action in a 90-80 victory against Holy Cross University in an opening season exhibition. The Catamounts were shooting hot out of the gate, scoring 58 points on 70 % from the field in the first half alone.
