Game between title candidates PSV and Feyenoord finishes 1-1 in Eindhoven

The game between the two main favorites for the Eredivisie title this season, Feyenoord and PSV, finished 1-1 on Sunday. Guus Til and Anis Hadj Moussa scored the goals.

Feyenoord will remain top of the table thanks to the point but could see AZ close the gap at the top to one point if the Alkmaarders defeat FC Twente in Enschede on Sunday, and Ajax could get to within three points if they beat Sparta Rotterdam away later in the afternoon.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst brought Japanese defender Tsuyoshi Watanabe into the side. It led to a position change for Mika Marmol; he was put at left back with Javi Lopez put on the bench. PSV were boosted by the return of Ruben van Bommel; he had missed the last two games through injury.

PSV, fresh off a vital away win against FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League, came out confidently, with an intense high press that Feyenoord struggled to deal with a lot of the time.

The first goal fell in the 21st minute. The Rotterdammers failed to clear a corner, and this eventually led to Guus Til volleying it into the top corner of the net against his former side. The goal was assisted by Lutsharel Geertruida, another former Feyenoord player.

PSV were in control for most of the first half, with Matej Kovar forced into one real save. Oussama Targhalline played a low pass to striker Nacho Ferri, who had gotten in front of his man and flicked it towards goal; Kovar was able to save the attempt.

The home side were inches away from making it 2-0 by the 39th minute. A cross from Sergino Dest found Armando Obispo unmarked in the box, but the centre-back’s header hit the outside of the post.

Feyenoord equalized in the 55th minute. It was a typical goal from Feyenoord’s main man, Anis Hadj Moussa. The Algerian winger cut inside before hitting a ferocious shot into the far corner, giving Kovar no chance.

It was almost a quick-fire double for Van Bronckhorst’s side when they came close again a few minutes later. A corner found Nacho Ferri, whose header was saved by Kovar before a vital block from Filip Kostic prevented Feyenoord captain Luciano Valente from giving Feyenoord the lead.

An unfortunate error from Mika Marmol gave PSV a chance to score in the 66th minute. The Spaniard tried to play a simple pass back to Tjark Ernst in the penalty area, but it hit the heel of Watanabe coming out to Van Bommel, and his shot was wild, sailing far over the goal.

PSV’s close chance of the game was another unusual one. Mauro Junior played a lobbed cross which Ernst got a hand on; seeing the ball drop right in front of goal, it was cleared by a defender into Til, and it went out for a goal kick.

The game was played in good spirits, and yet Geertruida and Feyenoord defender Jeremiah St. Juste had to be separated at the end of the game after a confrontation. It did not escalate to many others, and the situation was calmed down by other teammates.
