Six games, six points: Eagles’ third-quarter failures persist

Changing quarterbacks did not change what happens when the Eagles return from halftime. Philadelphia went scoreless in the third quarter of Sunday’s 25-14 loss to Carolina, leaving the offense with only six third-quarter points in six games and another troubling pattern: Every second-half opening drive has ended in a three-and-out.

Tanner McKee’s first start of the season extended a pattern that preceded his move to the lineup. The Eagles have lost four consecutive games, and their inability to establish anything immediately after halftime has become a recurring obstacle for offensive coordinator Sean Mannion and head coach Nick Sirianni.

The opening possessions matter beyond the missing points. Three plays and a punt eliminate an opportunity to establish field position, give the defense a longer break, and dictate the direction of the second half. For an injury-depleted team already struggling to sustain drives, repeatedly surrendering that opportunity makes the rest of the afternoon more difficult.

Against Carolina, Philadelphia finished with 222 total yards and eight punts. McKee threw for 215 yards on 45 attempts, while the running game produced only 35 yards. DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert combined for 13 catches and 136 yards, but their production could not prevent another empty third quarter.

The drought doesn't prove every failure stems from play-calling. Protection, penalties, quarterback decisions, and unsuccessful runs all influence whether a possession survives. However, its persistence across quarterback changes makes it increasingly difficult to frame the problem around one player.

Sirianni confirmed Monday that Mannion remains the play-caller and expressed confidence in his staff. That backing now needs to produce a more effective approach after halftime. With Jalen Hurts out for the season, Philadelphia must build an offense its available personnel can execute. Ending the streak of second-half three-and-outs would be a meaningful place to start against Dallas.
