Nico Paz inspires Como to victory as Fiorentina suffer second straight defeat

Como ended a three-match winless run in all competitions with a 3-1 victory over Fiorentina at Stadio Artemio Franchi, a result that lifted Cesc Fabregas’ side into Serie A’s top four.

Fiorentina made the brighter start and should have taken the lead after 10 minutes. Nicolo Fagioli collected a flicked pass and moved into the penalty area, where he beat his marker before seeing his close-range effort deflected behind for a corner.

Como gradually established control and soon created three significant opportunities. David de Gea produced an excellent point-blank save to deny Anastasios Douvikas, Mattia Liberali sent the rebound wide and De Gea then kept out a close-range header from Nico Paz.

The visitors took the lead shortly after the half-hour mark. Liberali shifted onto his left foot inside the area and struck beyond De Gea into the far corner.

Fiorentina’s position worsened four minutes later when Paz headed Como’s second into the left corner. The hosts responded before half-time, with Marin Pongracic following up to drive the ball into the net from close range after the initial effort had been saved.

Pongracic appeared to have completed a remarkable comeback in added time, scoring his second goal in four minutes to bring Fiorentina level. However, the goal was disallowed for offside following a lengthy VAR review.

Fiorentina were unable to carry that momentum into the second half and fell two goals behind again 12 minutes after the restart.

Douvikas received possession 25 yards from goal and went past Radu Dragusin before creating room for a right-footed shot. His effort went between the legs of the advancing De Gea to restore Como’s two-goal advantage.

The goal continued Douvikas’ strong record away from home. Each of his last five league goals has been scored on the road.

Fiorentina pressed for a response in the closing stages, with Alieu Njie and Fagioli both forcing saves from Jean Butez. Unlike Como, though, the home side could not find the clinical finish required and slipped to consecutive Serie A defeats.

Como have now won six of their past eight away league matches. Fiorentina, meanwhile, have dropped to 19th and have fewer than five points after seven Serie A games for only the third time in the modern era.

Nico Paz was named Flashscore’s Man of the Match.
