Niklas Hauptmann opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the ninth minute, before Simon Straudi doubled Dynamo’s advantage shortly after the interval. Thomas Stamm’s side then held firm to claim all three points in front of 30,651 supporters at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, recording their first clean sheet since the second matchday.

The hosts made an ideal start to the contest and were awarded a penalty in the ninth minute following a VAR review. Magdeburg defender Tobias Müller caught Nicolai Rapp on the leg while attempting to clear the ball, prompting the referee to consult the pitchside monitor before pointing to the spot.

Hauptmann stepped up and confidently converted the penalty to give Dresden an early advantage, continuing his recent scoring form after also finding the net against Osnabrück last weekend.

Magdeburg responded by taking greater control of possession and attempting to work their way back into the contest. However, despite enjoying spells on the ball, the visitors struggled to turn their dominance into clear-cut opportunities against a disciplined Dresden defence.

The hosts remained dangerous on the counterattack and gradually regained their initiative towards the end of the first half, heading into the break with their slender advantage intact.

Dresden carried that momentum into the second period and doubled their lead just five minutes after the restart. A cross from Jonas Sterner was not properly dealt with by the Magdeburg defence, allowing Straudi to collect the loose ball on the edge of the penalty area before firing a low effort beyond goalkeeper Dominik Reimann in the 50th minute.

The goal left Magdeburg with a significant challenge as they searched for a route back into the game, but Dresden continued to threaten on the break.

Vincent Vermeij had an excellent opportunity to put the contest beyond doubt in the 68th minute after being released by a long pass from Sterner. The forward brought the ball under control and raced through on goal, but his effort was struck straight at Reimann, allowing the Magdeburg goalkeeper to keep his side in the match.

Nevertheless, Dresden remained defensively organised throughout the closing stages and prevented the visitors from finding a breakthrough, seeing out the contest to secure a valuable derby victory.

The result ends Dynamo’s five-match winless streak and provides a significant boost for Stamm’s side, who move out of the relegation places with their first clean sheet since the second matchday.

For Magdeburg, the defeat is a setback after their 3-0 victory over Hannover 96 last weekend. Despite enjoying considerable possession, they were unable to make their territorial advantage count as Dresden proved more clinical in the decisive moments.
