Ghana will be without Antoine Semenyo for their important 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Somalia in November after the Manchester City winger suffered a knee injury that could keep him out for up to eight weeks.
The 26-year-old picked up the injury during Manchester City’s Premier League win over Ipswich Town on Saturday. His absence is a major setback for the Black Stars ahead of their Group C matches scheduled between November 11 and 14.
Semenyo’s injury is a concern for Ghana, who sit bottom of the group without a point after losing their opening two matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.
The forward also missed those games because of an ankle injury. Without him, Ghana lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia.
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the latest injury after medical scans showed that it was not as serious as first feared.
“After the scan we feel much better because it’s not as bad as we expected,” Maresca said.
“It could be eight weeks, so now the most important thing is for him to recover.”
Semenyo’s expected absence puts more pressure on Ghana to collect maximum points against Somalia and revive their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON.
