Dwight Yorke identifies culture change as key to reviving Ghana’s Black Stars

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke believes Ghana’s Black Stars possess a squad capable of competing at the highest level, insisting the team’s struggles are rooted in culture rather than a lack of talent.

The four-time African champions have endured a disastrous start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, losing 2-0 away to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Those back-to-back defeats have left Ghana rooted to the bottom of Group C without a point after two matches, piling pressure on the national team ahead of the remaining qualifiers.

Despite the poor results, Yorke remains impressed by the quality available to Ghana.

“You look at the squad and your eyes open even wider,” the former Trinidad and Tobago international told The Guardian.

The ex-Manchester United forward, who recently expressed interest in coaching the Black Stars, believes the solution goes beyond appointing a new manager. According to Yorke, Ghana must build a stronger team culture and create a shared vision among players, coaches and football administrators if the Black Stars are to return to their best.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has appointed Black Queens head coach Kim Björkegren to lead the Black Stars on an interim basis during the November international window against Somalia.

The Swedish trainer will be assisted by Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko and former Ghana international Godwin Attram as the Black Stars look to revive their faltering AFCON qualifying campaign.
