Sam Ssimbwa returns to URA FC for second stint
URA Head Coach Sam Ssimbwa

URA FC have reappointed Sam Ssimbwa as head coach on a one-year contract, renewable, marking the experienced tactician’s return to the club after five years away.

The Tax Collectors confirmed Ssimbwa’s appointment on Tuesday, following their decision to part ways with Jimmy Kintu Mwera and his technical team after a disappointing start to the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season.

Fondly known as “Omulangira,” Ssimbwa returns to familiar surroundings, having previously managed URA between 2018 and 2021.

His first spell saw him come close to guiding the club to the league title in the 2020/21 campaign, finishing second behind Express FC.

The experienced tactician brings a wealth of experience, having managed several clubs in Uganda and across the region, including Express FC, KCCA FC, SC Villa, Kitara FC, Tusker FC, Simba SC, Sofapaka and the now-defunct SC Victoria University.

Ssimbwa also served as an assistant coach of the Uganda Cranes before leaving the national team setup in November 2025.

His appointment comes after URA parted ways with Mwera and his backroom staff following a disappointing start to the campaign.

The Tax Collectors have struggled for consistency in the opening weeks of the season and will be hoping Ssimbwa’s return can spark an improvement in results.

The new coach is expected to begin work immediately, taking charge of URA when they host UPDF FC at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Tuesday evening.

Ssimbwa’s immediate task will be to steady the team and guide the Tax Collectors back to winning ways as they look to climb the league table.
