Fountain Valley tops Valencia to stake claim to Lambda League crown
Fountain Valley wide receiver Drake Robinson (3) lunges for a touchdown against Valencia Friday at ‘Cap’ Sheue Field in Huntington Beach.

Drake Robinson understands the uproar accompanying Fountain Valley’s first league championship in most of its roster’s lifetimes. It’s a thrill, of course.

Finally, the Barons are where they belong, as the senior receiver, wildcat runner and safety noted following Friday night’s lightning-delayed triumph over visiting Valencia at Huntington Beach High’s ‘Cap’ Sheue Field to ensure a share, at the least, of the Lambda League title.

“It was absolutely the expectation,” said Robinson, who accounted for all five of Fountain Valley’s offensive touchdowns in the 49-14 rout. “Getting bumped down to this league [in this year’s Orange County re-leaguing], it was absolutely the expectation to go out there and dominate.”

It’s the long-beleaguered program’s first finish atop the league standings since a five-way tie for first in the Sunset League in 2008, and an expected win over Santa Ana Calvary Chapel (4-5, 1-3 in the Lambda League) in Thursday’s regular-season finale would make it the first outright title since 1988.

Fountain Valley wide receiver Raymond Dillon Jr. (13) carries the ball downfield against Valencia on Friday in a Lambda League game.

Fountain Valley (6-3, 4-0) floundered in the Foxtrot League the past two seasons after struggling for years to compete in the Sunset League. The Barons have thrived in the Lambda League’s more comfortable competitive landscape — dominating three foes after a tight victory in the league opener over Sonora (8-1, 3-1), the only team that can catch them — and believe they’re prime contenders when the CIF Southern Section playoffs begin next week. Division 9 seems the likeliest bracket.

“It feels great to be able to change this program and just show people that we can win and that we’re coming for it all,” said junior quarterback Isaac Combs, who completed 21 of 29 passes for 311 yards, 249 of them on 15 completions to Robinson and Raymond Dillon Jr.

Combs has hit on 64 of 79 throws for 880 yards and seven touchdowns the past three games, as the Barons have scored 136 points in victories over Woodbridge, Westminster and Valencia.

Fountain Valley’s Drake Robinson (3) leaps over the pile for a touchdown against Valencia on Friday in a Lambda League game.

Robinson thinks “we go all the way, no doubt.”

“[If] we stay healthy,” he said, “I think the ball bounces our way.”

Robinson caught 10 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns, ran for a team-best 41 yards and two scores on five wildcat carries, provided 11 first downs, and was vital within a defensive unit that surrendered just 61 yards and two first downs — one 57-yard, trick-play run aside — as the Barons pulled away to a 35-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

They went ahead right away, on Robinson’s 33-yard sprint up the middle not quite three minutes in, lined up for the kickoff and were sent to the locker room for a 27-minute break after lightning was seen to the east. Valencia (4-5, 0-4) went three-and-out when the game resumed, and it was 14-0, on a 17-yard Combs-to-Robinson pass, eight plays later.

The Tigers then stopped Fountain Valley on its next two possessions and halved the deficit following Lukas Delatorre’s 57-yard swing-door sweep up the left sideline to the Barons’ 8-yard line. It was 21-7 by the break, and Fountain Valley coach Mitch Olson was not satisfied.

“We got out, 14-0, and then guys started to try to do special things instead of just doing what we were supposed to do,” Olson said. “At halftime I go, ‘Hey, man, we’re not that good to be going out there and trying to do things that we’re not supposed to be doing. So let’s get back to doing the things we’re supposed to do, hit the guys that are open, do your job on defense.’ And second half, we came out and played a lot better.

They scored four times while taking just nine snaps after halftime. The first touchdown came easy: Robinson scored from the 1-yard line following a botched Valencia punt attempt that left the ball inches from the goal line. He scored on a 23-yard pass on the next possession after he and Dillon caught touchdown passes erased by holding calls.

Mason Nguyen’s 97-yard interception return in the last half-minute of the third quarter forced a running clock, and Dillon returned the kickoff 87 yards for another score after the Tigers drove 78 yards against reserves, mostly on Jake Allen runs, for their second touchdown.

The Barons say they will hold off celebrating the league title until it’s entirely theirs — “That’s not even in our mind,” Olson said — but it feels good.

Valencia quarterback Deacon Belsey (3) fires a pass against Fountain Valley on Friday in a Lambda League football game.

“You know what? Our school needed this,” Olson added. “We’re very spirited. You see the kids up there [in the stands]. And it’s been rough, because we haven’t had [this kind of success]. And now we’re giving our people something to be happy about and rally around. And so we’re pretty fortunate.

“The kids have done a great job.”
