Tom Brady has gotten more comfortable in his role as Fox Sports’ lead NFL analyst in a short amount of time. But this week, he turned up the ante on officials during the game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers.
After some questionable calls, particularly for roughing the passer penalties, the seven-time Super Bowl champion wasn’t shy about voicing his criticism of the officials. However, for fans, it was a hilariously ironic situation, given Brady’s own history with the penalty.
There were a few instances in particular when Brady was extremely vocal about the officials’ calls. A roughing the passer penalty late in the third quarter that turned a drive-ending snap into an automatic first down.
And a second roughing the passer penalty late in the fourth quarter that immediately put the Lions into field goal range. The latter was the one he was loudest against, as Ari Meirov posted the clip on social media.
“My goodness. What is that?” Brady could be heard questioning. “There’s no way! It’s definitely not roughing the passer.”
Even though his criticism might have been valid in the context of the game, fans found the situation ironic. During his playing career, Brady would go after the referees to make those same calls, and for some fans, it was a complete U-turn from who he is nowadays.
“The irony of Tom saying that, when he got the same calls for less lol,” one fan pointed out.
For some, though, it was a harsh memory, as they specifically called out, “He’s literally lived off that rule his whole career. Grady Jarett sacked him playing Tampa, and it was called roughing, which it was not.”
That play was burned into a lot of people’s minds, as one fan showed an image of the play alongside the caption, “Don’t disagree, but message coming from the wrong person lol.”
One fan mocked, “Tom Brady complaining about the league being too soft when he’s the reason the league became soft is poetic,” while another fan found the entire exchange hilarious, pointing out, “There’s something really funny about hearing Tom Brady complain about roughing the passer calls.”
Even New England Patriots fans, who saw their franchise win six Super Bowls under Brady, had to admit, “Aye man, as a Pats fan, he def got some questionable ones in his career too. 2018 AFCCG prime example.”
Despite his own experiences against the referees during his playing career, the criticism he has levied against them in Week 7 hasn’t gone without notice. And even with their reservations about the messenger, many fans shared his view on many of the penalties.
