Bekker’s record-breaking form signals exciting 2027 season

He clocked 03:53.91 in the U17 boys' 1 500m, before narrowly missing George Kusche’s 800m record of 1:50.75 by clocking a personal best 1:51.43.

Kempton Park middle-distance runner Michael Bekker has sent an early warning to his rivals ahead of the 2027 track and field season, following record-breaking performances at the Wildeklawer Top 30 in Sasolburg on October 16.

The athlete stormed to victory in the boys’ U17 1 500m in 03:53.91, before narrowly missing George Kusche’s 800m record of 1:50.75 by clocking a personal best 1:51.43 for another victory.

While coach Michael van Aswegen is cautious about reading too much into preseason performances, Bekker’s impressive showing offers an encouraging glimpse of what could lie ahead after a season that tested him mentally.

Michael Bekker closed his preseason in style at the Wildeklawer Top 30 meet in Sasolburg.

Following a disappointing cross-country campaign, the middle-distance runner has responded with performances that underline his ability and potential, and Van Aswegen believes the progress behind the scenes is just as significant.

“Growth and progression are not always linear or reflected in performances,” Van Aswegen said. “Even though these performances showcase his ability and talent, Michael put an extreme amount of effort into his mental game during the cross-country season, when nothing seemed to click for him.”

While the records are encouraging, the bigger picture remains Bekker’s steady development and preparation for the challenges ahead.

“I think records are always there to be broken and, being preseason, it just shows us that we are on the right trajectory for the 2027 season,” Van Aswegen said. “We don’t want to read too much into the breaking of records, but rather look at our progression throughout the year.”

Bekker has concluded his preseason at the same standard he reached when competing at the ASA age-group track and field championships in March, providing a solid foundation for the next phase of his campaign.

His progress, Van Aswegen stressed, is no overnight success story.

“Michael’s improvements have come as a result of many years of effort,” Van Aswegen said. “This is by no means an overnight success story. He has been working hard since Grade Eight. A lot of this improvement is down to him being willing to put in the hard yards when no one else is around checking up to make sure things are getting done.”

Looking further ahead, the coach believes Bekker has the potential to pursue a college athletics career and possibly turn professional if his performances continue to develop.

“His current trajectory points to a very exciting 2027 season which would set him up for life beyond high school,” Van Aswegen said. “I know he would like an opportunity to study abroad. So we are working towards opening those doors for him. As long as he continues to bring his side to the table, anything is possible.”

The immediate focus shifts to the Region 5 Games in Mozambique in December, where Bekker aims to carry this form forward before building towards the key months of February, March and April.
