TP Mazembe and Cote d’Ivoire’s two representatives were eliminated in the second qualifying round of the CAF Champions League, while Moroccan champions MAS Fes secured their return to the competition after 14 years away.
TP Mazembe were beaten 1-0 by Club Africain at the Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi in Rades on Sunday, going out 2-1 on aggregate. The Congolese side had been held to a 1-1 draw at home in the first leg a week earlier.
Cameroon striker Taddeus Nkeng, who joined Club Africain from Stade Malien last summer, scored the decisive goal in first-half stoppage time at 45 minutes and 2 seconds.
The result means TP Mazembe have failed to reach the next stage for the second consecutive year.
MAS Fes also progressed after winning 2-1 away to ASEC Mimosas at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan. The first leg in Morocco had ended 1-1.
Christopher Ibayi, one of MAS Fes’ new signings, put the visitors ahead in the 62nd minute. ASEC Mimosas levelled through Kevin Bakare 11 minutes later, but Khalid Baba scored in the seventh minute of added time to send the Moroccan champions through.
MAS Fes will now return to the CAF Champions League after a 14-year absence. ASEC Mimosas joined TP Mazembe among the eliminated sides.
Cote d’Ivoire’s other club representative, FC San Pedro, also went out after losing 2-0 away to Nouadhibou in Nouakchott.
Nouadhibou overturned FC San Pedro’s advantage with goals in the 10th and 53rd minutes. FC San Pedro had won the first leg 2-1 in San-Pedro, but their late goal in that match, scored at 90 minutes and 8 seconds, was not enough to secure qualification.
