Saquon Barkley's toughness stands out amid Eagles' fifth straight loss

Saquon Barkley continues to demonstrate his value to the Philadelphia Eagles, even as injuries threaten to derail his season.

The veteran running back delivered another determined performance Monday night, rushing for 62 yards and a touchdown on seven carries before being listed as questionable to return with a back injury in Philadelphia's 38-21 loss to Dallas. Barkley entered the game with a hamstring issue and repeatedly tried to stay in, despite appearing uncomfortable throughout the second half.

He averaged 8.9 yards per carry, including a 29-yard run, providing the Eagles with explosive production they have struggled to generate consistently.

But Barkley's night also highlighted the challenges facing an already depleted backfield.

The running back was seen limping along the sideline, sitting on the bench and speaking with members of Philadelphia's medical staff. He later held his helmet and appeared interested in returning, but Elijah Mitchell handled late-game opportunities as Dameon Pierce also dealt with an apparent injury. Barkley has dealt with a stinger, hamstring discomfort, and now a back injury this season. His continued effort has been impressive, but Philadelphia must consider the bigger picture with 10 regular-season games remaining.

The Eagles have already played much of the season without their preferred offensive personnel, and losing Barkley for an extended period would create another major challenge for Sean Mannion. Philadelphia has struggled to sustain a productive running game, making Barkley's explosiveness even more valuable. His 62 yards on seven attempts demonstrated that he can still change a game when healthy enough to contribute.

The Eagles now face a difficult balancing act.

They need Barkley's production to remain competitive in the NFC East, but his health will be critical if Philadelphia hopes to recover from its 2-5 start. His toughness was never in question Monday night. His availability going forward matters most.
