Liverpool may have discovered a potential Mohamed Salah replacement after Rio Ngumoha delivered an outstanding performance against Villarreal in Europe.
The 18-year-old registered two assists as Liverpool recovered from two goals behind to secure an impressive 4-3 Champions League victory.
Despite spending heavily on attacking reinforcements, Liverpool did not sign an obvious replacement for Salah on the right wing.
Summer signing Bradley Barcola, reportedly arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £123 million, is considered more comfortable operating from the left.
Liverpool echo states that Manager Andoni Iraola has increasingly deployed Ngumoha on the opposite flank, where his pace and dribbling have troubled opposition defenders.
Iraola praised his development, highlighting improvements in his weaker left foot, defensive contribution and ability to follow tactical instructions.
He said: “I’m really happy with Rio, not because he played really well, because I think he’s trying to improve everything that we try to correct. Attitude wise, he’s ready now.”
However, the teenager still has considerable ground to cover before matching Salah’s remarkable attacking numbers for Liverpool.
Salah recorded 257 goals and 123 assists across 442 appearances, establishing himself as the club’s third-highest all-time goalscorer.
Ngumoha has yet to score this season, while his two assists against Villarreal represented his first goal contributions of the campaign.
His limited Premier League opportunities also show that he remains a developing prospect rather than an established first-team regular.
Nevertheless, the youngster’s confidence is growing, and his impressive European display offered encouraging evidence of his potential on the right.
Ngumoha explained: “I think it’s helped me a lot in training. The gaffer, all the coaching staff, all the players believe in me and slowly, slowly I’m getting better on the right.”
Liverpool may have found a promising long-term option, but replacing Salah’s goalscoring output remains an enormous challenge.
