Kasim Gökyıldız resigns as Heart of Lions head coach after poor start to season

Turkish football coach Kasim Gökyıldız has resigned as head coach of Kpando-based Heart of Lions Football Club following a disappointing start to the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.

The resignation, confirmed on Thursday, October 29, 2026, by the club’s Public Relations Officer, Eric Adzie, brings an abrupt end to the Turkish tactician’s tenure, barely three months after his appointment.

Gökyıldız, who took charge of the club in July 2026 on a one-year contract, was expected to strengthen the team’s performance and improve its competitiveness in Ghana’s top-flight football competition.

However, the club has struggled to produce convincing results under his leadership, recording just one victory, five draws and two defeats in its opening eight league matches.

The results have left Heart of Lions with eight points from a possible 24, placing the Kpando-based side precariously close to the relegation zone.

With the club sitting just one point above the relegation places, concerns have intensified among supporters and football enthusiasts over the team’s performance and prospects for the remainder of the season.

The disappointing results, including a recent defeat, are believed to have increased pressure on the technical team and contributed to Gökyıldız’s decision to step down.

His departure comes at a critical stage of the campaign, with Heart of Lions facing the challenge of reversing its poor run of form to avoid becoming embroiled in a relegation battle.

The resignation also raises questions about the club’s technical direction and its ability to regain the momentum needed to compete effectively in the Premier League.

Although the club’s Public Relations Officer has confirmed the resignation, further details surrounding the circumstances of Gökyıldız’s departure have yet to be made public.

It also remains unclear whether the club’s management will appoint an interim coach or immediately begin the search for a substantive replacement.

The development is expected to attract considerable attention among supporters in Kpando and the wider football community, particularly as the club seeks to stabilise its performance and improve its position on the league table.

Heart of Lions will now be looking to regroup and restore confidence among its supporters as the Ghana Premier League season progresses.
